I recently visited Boulangerie French Bastard on 61 Rue Oberkampf in Paris, and I have to say, it was an incredible experience from start to finish. This place is not your average bakery—it’s a modern, innovative take on French pastry-making, and it completely exceeded my expectations.

The Food

I decided to try their charcoal brioche sandwich, which immediately caught my eye. At first, I was intrigued by the dark color of the brioche—it’s not something you see every day! But from the first bite, I was hooked. The brioche was incredibly soft, with a slight crispiness on the outside that gave it a wonderful texture. It had a subtle smoky depth that complemented the filling beautifully. The ingredients inside were fresh and well-balanced, making every bite flavorful and satisfying. It was a unique twist on a classic sandwich, and I would definitely order it again.

For dessert, I went with their citron pastry, and I can confidently say it was one of the best citrus desserts I’ve ever had. The moment I took a bite, I was impressed by the perfect balance of flavors. The lemony tang was vibrant and refreshing, yet not overpowering. It had just the right amount of sweetness to create harmony between the tartness and the creaminess of the dessert. The texture was smooth, light, and airy, melting in my mouth with every bite. It was the kind of dessert that makes you pause and savor every moment.

The Atmosphere & Service

Beyond the amazing food, what really made my visit special was the atmosphere and the service. The bakery itself has a stylish, modern design that feels inviting and comfortable. It’s the perfect spot to grab a pastry and a coffee, whether you want to sit down and enjoy the moment or take it to go.

One thing that truly stood out was the friendliness of the staff. The lady working there was incredibly warm and welcoming, making me feel right at home from the moment I walked in. She was patient, helpful, and genuinely kind—something that makes a big difference when visiting a new place. It’s always a pleasure to be served by people who love what they do and take pride in their work.

Final Thoughts

If you’re in Paris and looking for a bakery that offers something beyond the usual croissants and baguettes, Boulangerie French Bastard is the place to go. They take traditional French baking and give it a creative, modern twist, resulting in truly unique and delicious pastries.

The charcoal brioche sandwich was a one-of-a-kind experience, and the citron dessert was absolutely divine. On top of that, the service was excellent, making my visit even more enjoyable. Whether you’re a pastry lover, a foodie, or just someone who appreciates great flavors, this bakery is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be coming back to try more of their...

A bakery that stands out from the others thanks to its strong, somewhat irreverent pop identity. This approach is clearly evident in the aesthetics of the shops, the products, and the distinct flavors.

The apple-filled puff pastry was truly surprising, with a dual contrast between the filling and the pastry: the filling was sweet and soft, while the pastry was savory and crispy. An incredible apple flavor and a perfect balance.

The pain au chocolat had a interesting texture because of the upper crust which is incredibly crispy, with toasted notes.

The pan suisse had a very rich and indulgent creamy filling. Perhaps the structure was slightly less crispy than I expected (but it might have been from a batch baked some hours before).

The croissant was good, but I had better ones in the city.

I also appreciated the tote baguette idea: a tote bag designed to hold baguettes or other baked goods, hence with a tall and narrow shape. The fabric is really nice, and the inside plastic lining prevents the stuff you put in from making it greasy. An eco-friendly and trendy alternative to classic paper bags. It's these aspects that highlight their attention to detail and innovative spirit.

Overall, one of the most interesting bakeries in Paris that I greatly appreciated for its approach. I'm not sure if they have the absolute best products, but they are great therefore they...

French Bastards Bakery offers an irresistible selection of pastries and croissants, with their pain au chocolat standing out as a highlight. For those seeking something more adventurous, innovative creations like the matcha croissant and raspberry-pistachio escargot blend classic techniques with bold, modern flavors.

The bakery’s bread selection, ranging from traditional baguettes to bold, tangy sourdoughs, showcases a dedication to both quality and creativity.

Equally impressive is the patisserie selection, with indulgent tarts, éclairs, and cakes. The lemon tart strikes the perfect balance between tartness and sweetness, while the éclairs are filled with velvety creams that elevate every bite.

The service is friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. French Bastards Bakery is a must-visit for anyone in Paris who appreciates exceptional pastries and a creative spin on tradition. It beautifully marries the classic with the...
