Le Darwin — Restaurant in Sélestat-Erstein

We visited the bar today by chance. It looked like a coffee/bar combo. from outside. The person who serviced us was really pleasant, friendly, attentive and came to the table shortly afterwards. He spoke English so there was no fighting with French language and someone spoke German too. The surprise was the cosy backyard of the restaurant/bar, which is not to be seen in some German cities as well. from bar stools to lounge sofa everything was available. Same with drinks. We ordered all varieties and all cocktails mixed and tasted well. Though I missed the celery salt ring on my bloody mary it was mixed well. The ambience was inviting, music not loud that one could still chit chat. They also served small food, as i could see on other tables. Gives you a holiday feeling in a tropical sea side bar without the sea of course. The menu card is available online. Surely one pays 2-3 € extra than if you drink in a normal restaurant. But then you sit better and have more choices. We will surely visit again. I would recommend it to everyone...

Je vais tâcher de rester indulgent, il s'agit avant tout d'un bar proposant des petits plats (tarte flambée, tartine, etc) et non d'un restaurant à proprement parlé.

Sur le plan gastronomique : les tartes flambées sont plus que correctes, avec un parti prit sur l'assaisonnement assumé et qui fonctionne. J'ai cela dit été non pas déçu mais un peu en reste vis-à-vis du cocktail (à base de Vodka et framboises fraiches) auquel j'en attendais un peu plus.

Enfin, vient le point noir de notre soirée du vendredi : Le service s'est avéré très décevant. Entre 30 et 40 min d'attente par visite du serveur. Les apéritifs ont mis au moins 20 minutes à nous être servi. À deux reprises nos commandes de tarte flambée ont été oubliées et nous avons dû patienter très longtemps pour finir notre repas : pas de dessert pour nous, il était +22h quand nous avions fini de manger alors que nous étions arrivé à 19h40 !

Enfin et le plus aberrant selon moi, lors d'une nouvelle tentative de commander des tartes flambées, le serveur nous à indiquer ne plus prendre de commande en raison de l'incapacité des équipes de suivre le rythme. Bien que le choix de cesser la prise de nouvelles commandes a été je pense judicieuse, il n'est pas normal dans l'hôtellerie restauration d'en arriver là. Il existe soit un problème d'organisation en interne, soit un problème de dimensionnement des équipes ou du nombre de couvert que vous pouvez vous permettre...

An extraordinary gem in the last place you’d expect it (Chatenwhere?), rich with exquisite artworks, stuffed animals from the Nile to the Rhine, and an assortment of books to rival their liqueur collection. Plenty more charming than the live fish are the gorgeous staff (they’re all in the same family so the Frenchness is well-preserved).

Doubtless the secret but entirely unsubtle night life of Alsace, atmospheric in the extreme. Would come back to the city...
