Le Cancalais - Bar Brasserie Saint-Malo — Restaurant in Saint-Malo

Did not get the chance to eat. Got in there around 13h10. Said "bonjour" but was ignored. Waited for 5mn, she just ignored me. At which point I stood in front of her and repeated "bonjour", only then did she reply. I asked if I could lunch she replied "OK I'm coming back". I sat at a table that still needed to be cleared of last costumers plates & cups... waited 15mn. She passed, many times, served people, cleared and cleaned other tables, checked people in, & out, and I'm still waiting. Finally, another lady came out asking if I was done with my meal! I replied no, I'm waiting to place my order, then I got this reply "we are EXPECTING 20ish people I'm not sure there will be anything left when they get here, to serve you, after them."

I stood up, thanked her and left. I forgot to mention that I was alone, low season, in November.

Thankfully, just across the street, went to the L'Atre, got seated right away in the sun on the terrace, great food, sunny day, great view... that took the edge off and I had...

This bar was my 'local' between February and October 1985, whilst I was project manager on a 2 story apartment on nearby Quai Admiral Guy Mengay.

In those days it was owned and run by Laurant and Bertrand. (not sure of the spellings). At 1 time I had 9 workers from Alderney in the English Channel Islands working on the project. This was our absolute favourite bar. Fantastic staff, brilliant locals and great times.

I have been back here many times and it never fails to impress, with those amazing views, great food and always good beers.

Highly recommended.

If anybody knows what happened to L&B... tell them Cockney...

This place has nothing to recommend it but the view. You’ll be surrounded by chain smokers/vapers and there’s barely 10cm between the tables. We got the impression the staff couldn’t care less, confirmed by the fact that they twice served warm (white) wine and when asked for ice, slammed the glass down on the table for our temerity. Don’t give them your money there are far, far nicer...
