Canova — Restaurant in Toulon

Worst food I had in Toulon.

Starter (some type of hummus and another spread) with bread was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, and all the other plats got progressively worse.

I was there on Wed, Sept 3; and after dinner the chef mentioned they had just created a new menu for the season. Everything except the appetizer and desserts needed improvement.

We ordered all the seafood dishes:

1. the clams were EXTREMELY salty, and out of the 30 we had in our bowl only 21 were actually open to eat - very salty.

2. the scallops dish (that may have had coconut milk in it and some green accent) was decent, but flavorless

3. the tuna had some type of crispy, curly, chip-like toppings that looked like Frito-Lays - added nothing to the dish, but the tuna was prepared decently.

4. We also had some vegetable dish, and I recall it tasting the best.

Dessert (not shown, I was so disgusted by the other dishes that I lost the will to take pictures) was the best. We tried both 3 on the menu. The tarte sablée was the best dessert I've probably had in my life at a restaurant, but the seafood dishes were such a disappointment I couldn't stop complaining about them the whole time.

Quand on a dîné ici, on se demande si on va divulguer ce coin de paradis aux yeux du monde entier en publiant un commentaire … Mais voilà, il faut reconnaître les bonnes choses et laisser les autres en profiter.

Que vous ayez passé une bonne ou une mauvaise journée, vous asseoir au Canova le soir vous fera le plus grand bien. Tout d’abord vos papilles se raviront de déguster une farandole de saveurs plus authentiques les unes que les autres. On peut dire que les plats sont recherchés sans en avoir l’air. Je pense que cela est propre aux génies. Créer quelque chose de si bon que ça en devient une évidence.

En mangeant, vous vous souviendrez d’un plat de votre grand-mère ou encore d’un voyage à l’autre bout du monde. Tout cela avec cette touche unique, que vous ne trouverez nulle part ailleurs. Vous aurez le plaisir de siroter du vin choisi précieusement par le propriétaire, qui mettra son cœur à vous servir.

Cette ambiance chaleureuse et sans prétention souligne d’autant plus le talent de Francesco, qui est un chef discret et modeste qui brille par sa générosité et son talent. Ceux qui sont passés par ici savent qu’ils ont l’immense honneur de connaître une cuisine aussi merveilleuse à un prix dérisoire. Quand j’habitais à Toulon je venais presque toutes les semaines, sans lassitude. Je savais qu’un jour cet endroit, ce paradis, ne serait peut être plus à ma portée… Hélas, j’ai dû quitter la métropole, et je vous le donne en mille, le Canova est l’endroit qui me manque le...

Our visit to La Canova was wonderful. The food is excellent, the staff are accommodating and friendly, and the atmosphere is truly like something out of a French film. Each plate we had was outstanding and inventive, with a mixture of flavours that was balanced perfectly. I would absolutely recommend La Canova to anyone visiting Toulon, and it is first on our list of places to visit the next time...
