Bavarian themed restaurant, serving up a host of traditional German/Bavarian meals, from schnitzel, sauerkraut, dumplings, and their speciality slow cooked (roasted and boiled) pork knuckle and lamb shank dishes. The restaurant is beautifully decorated in traditional Bavarian decor, and the staff is kitted out in traditional outfits, which adds to the experience - one waiter, who is a funny friendly guy, even went so far as to grow an impressive beard (see pics) Even more impressive is the food, which is rustik and homely. I had the goulash soup as a starter, which was hearty with a full depth of flavour, with a generous portion of thick cut veg and chunks of beef, and a generous portion. I then had the slow roast pork knuckle, with potato dumplings and sauerkraut, with a kind of gravy sauce. The pork fell off the bone, and was tender and moist, coated with a beautifully crisp and fatty crackling, which was all made to work with the sauce and sauerkraut to cut through the richness of the fat. The portion sizes were HUGE, and definitely something you could share with 2 people, if you don't feel like you could face a whole portion on your own, which I had to force myself to do. I had a look at the schnitzel another table had next to me, and vowed to go back just to try that when next in Berlin, it looked so good! As well as the amazing food, the staff were super warm, friendly, and accommodating. I turned up without a booking, and they happily squeezed me in between bookings without making me feel a nuisance. I had a lovely pint of Warsteiner with the meal, and all in all it came to only €30.50 (£25) which, in the UK could easily be double that amount. Considering the portions are enough for 2, then I'd say that's great value for money. I can't recommend this place more!

What a lovely German restaurant! The staff are so so friendly and welcoming and make you feel at home, which is important in a place that feels like it's where all the locals come for dinner. There are tons of German dishes on the menu of course and beers on tap. I'm partial to Schnitzel, so I got their Hamburg version, which appears to just be with a fried egg on top. The pork was a bit dry but the potatoes it came with were great, though I wish there had been more of them. My date got the Nürnberger Würstchen, which I had a couple of and they were also pretty good. Somehow we were still hungry after our mains so we also ordered the apple streudel, which was great. I will concede that ordering the Schnitzel at a place literally called "Zur Haxe" and rating it from that may be unfair, so I'll have to come back for an actual Haxe and update this. All in all, I'd say you shouldn't come here for a knock-your-socks-off German meal, but for the welcoming atmosphere, great local vibes, and maybe to practice your German. The food is just a bonus. Also, it's cash only unless you have a German EC card!

It’s a shame that despite good food, I won’t be going back there anymore. First of all, I’m Asian. Only after my own unpleasant experience, I found out that a surprising number of Asian customers had problems with this restaurant. Obviously it’s a very “German” restaurant, so I try my best to speak German when making reservations and ordering. Last time I went there, there was no hostess at the entrance and my husband was already having beer at our reserved table. So, my friend and I(both Asian) waived at him and started to walk over. Then a lady behind the bar yelled at us - loudly and rudely enough to turn everyone’s head - to stop. I pointed at the table and told her(in German) that my husband was already there, but she just rolled her eyes and shook her head, murmuring angrily to people around. Throughout the dinner, I watched other people walking in to join their tables. They were not stopped or treated rudely. Reading other negative reviews, it seems pretty clear why she gave us such a “special” attention. Shame. Our food was good as usual, the waitress was very friendly, but I’d rather eat at many other restaurants in Berlin that do not tolerate such behavior as a part of their...

This sweet, cozy restaurant in Prenzlauer Berg is a real gem. The atmosphere is somewhat kitschy, and all of the waitstaff wear traditional Bavarian style clothing (dirndl and lederhosen). When I had lunch there just before Christmas, the restaurant was full of local families enjoying food, beer, and good company.

I ordered the Gulasch vom Schwein, and it did not disappoint! The meat was tender, in a rich and satisfying sauce, and accompanied with a hearty portion of delicious red sauerkraut and two of the most buttery potato dumplings I’d ever had. It was a massive amount of food, but it was so good that I came close to finishing it all! There’s also a decent selection of beers on tap (vom Fass) and in bottles, along with wines and other drinks. I unfortunately did not have room for dessert, but everything I saw looked fantastic.

The service is friendly, and we felt right at home. We had entrees, beers, and peppermint tea, and the total was less than 30 Euros. It’s cash-only, but with those prices it doesn’t matter. Definitely seek out this restaurant if you want good, homestyle Bavarian...
