It’s our first time to visit because I wanna experience what the fuss is all about. The food is great. I like the Kare Kare very authentic, lechon is also good although the saltiness is not even some portion has less salty taste some is saltier than the other but since temperature is well kept prior to serving and the skin is crispy as promised that I still like it and I would say my expectation is met. My Aunt ordered Halo Halo and she loved it too.
On the things that they can improve definitely the service. It took longer than expected just for our order to be taken, serving time is acceptable. I went with a non Filipino company and he wasn’t very happy with the queue when we were asked to go back to the line just to buy extra cola when his iced coffee ran out. He waited a good amount of time in the middle of eating and I tried to ask any exception if we can be served first with extra cola but one of the crew names April said no you should go back on the front to order. When he finally got his glass of Cola he only said it wasn’t worth the wait to finally get a cola without gas on it anymore.
Towards the dessert which I have been looking forward to, I got confused because I shared it with my Aunt we both said the frosting is somewhat different so I stood up and asked if the cake is baked today or if it’s new or is the frosting really tastes lemony. The crew April must have overheard it and said yes because it’s cream cheese frosting and with a higher tone called out the other guest on another table (most probably a regular customer) and asked “How’s the cake? She said (pertaining to me) it tastes different.” The guy answered it’s okay it tasted the same as always.
I think the crew may have been insulted the way how she handled/reacted to the situation but I was only there to ask and not to humiliate the product that I ordered and already paid. I mean asking another customer on a louder tone of voice is really not necessary since I asked the guy on the front on a low tone of voice to not disturb the other people that was there at that moment.
The cake is only labeled “Ube Macapuno Cake.” I would recommend it to be labeled as “Ube Macapuno Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting” for the public to clearly understand what they’re eating/ about to eat. Tbh, I’ve never encountered Ube Cake with a stronger kick of cream cheese frosting on it so maybe you just need to get used onto eating it.
I still look forward in coming back specially coming with Filipino friends or even people from another culture who is intrigued how Filipino cuisine tastes like. The concept is great as it makes you feel closer to home but hopefully the dining area will be abit spacious and a faster service - plus more trained crews that can handle situations...
Read moreUbe de Oro is a nice little cafe that offers Filipino dishes and treats.
You should know two things, though. It's cramped. If you have problems sitting in a small space with people, it's not for you. It's really busy. It's no surprise, given how good it tastes. That's why you usually need to bring time with you. Waiting times of half an hour are normal. If you want to be sure of getting a seat straight away, you should wait outside the shop half an hour before it opens.
For the food: The portion sizes are good and the food is delicious. There are a handful of variations for each category. (E.g. rice with..., a variety of cakes, ice cream, etc.) The dishes are original Filipino cuisine, refined with herbs and spices. The quality is of a high standard and freshly prepared.
Drinks: In addition to typical Filipino (fruit) drinks, there are also classic cold and hot drinks.
Ordering process: Everyone who wants to eat in the café is given a number with an electronic device. You then wait at a free table. As soon as the device vibrates, you go to the order counter and place your order. This makes sense because of the limited space you have for walking. You hand in the device and, depending on the size of the order and the number of people at the table, you are given one or more new devices, which vibrate as soon as you can pick up your food at the serving counter. Drinks are called out in conjunction with the order number as soon as they are ready to be picked up.
At the end, you clear your table and put the dishes in a collection box.
I think this café is great and I will keep coming back.
However, one criticism I have is that some of the stools/chairs are wobbly. I wasn't worried that they would collapse, but it wasn't a...
Read moreWas torn between three or four star but in the end decided to give three stars because of the overall experience.
I have to say, the first time I came here to try ube, I was in love. Never expected to like ube this much. Had the halo halo, ube late, ube cake and other ube sweets.
Never tried their food so cant say anything about them and this review is only about the ube sweets.
If it was only for the ube sweets I would give five star, however the arrangement/organisation drags sadly the score down a lot.
Having to come here every time to wait more than hour just for a drink or cake is really not worth it.
The cafe is really small and therefore there isnt much space, and with so many people obviously itll be very crowded. The staff tried various solutions i guess but still havent found the right one, maybe it might be better to just relocate? Saw that they openend a new spot in aachen, maybe its better there?
Anyway, seating and table arrangements were changed a few times but its still cramped. Once they gave the first ten people a buzzer and the rest has to wait outside until a new seat opens up and the cycle repeats. Then the next time it was back to old format where we queue in the restaurant and if theres no space the rest has to wait outside.
The staff seem to be quite overwhelmed, after taking an order they immediately get to make that oder and let the rest wait. They would honestly benefit from hiring more staff.
With all above, the waiting time takes long, and when its hot its really torture. Hope theyll find a better solution, because waiting so long for something small and not cheap either is not worth it, even if the sweets are delicious as...
