Insulting and xenophobic. Nice bar, good locations. Great drinks and prices. However, as I said; xenophobic and insulting.
I spent some time there last night, and the majority of it was very pleasant. I tried hard to respect the local customs and chatted agreeably with the bar server.
However after me and two acquaintances had taken a few drinks, the bar server came over and engaged us in conversation. During this conversation (about travelling Plymouth football fans [real rough firm, those Pompey boys don't mess!]), the bar server said something to me along the lines of 'you're alright I suppose... For an English'.
I found this quite offensive and when they returned to the bar I quickly went over and explained to them that I had taken offense to the comment and why.
In 1944, my grandfather, Ray Wilson, finished his personal world war 2 hell in the small northern city of Bremen. He had joined the British army in 1939, in an (successful) attempt to escape a particularly cruel step mother. He was 14 years old at the time, and due to his age, could only join as a bandsman (2nd Tuba, military brass). But by 1944 he was 18 and D-DAY had come along. He was a radio operator in a tank. Desert Rats. The next dreadful months he spent trying to avoid getting vaporized along with the 4 other guys he was in the tank with. At the time the Germans in Normandy were fighting a frantic rearguard action. Grandad Ray would go out on manoeuvres and pray that there wasn't a two man RPG squad sitting in the sunken 'bocages' that were so typical of Normandy in those days.
Fast forward a couple of years, and we see a thoroughly fed up 20 year old rolling into the decimated streets of post war Bremen.
So after explaining (a much curtailed version of) this story to the bar server, I was deeply insulted that they continued to engage us in conversation and then proceed to lightly berate me for not speaking German or 'knowing the name of the bar I was sitting in'.
I had taken a choice not to practice my German when I entered that bar last night. I am a language teacher and have a post graduate background in linguistics. I speak Spanish at C2 level, french to B2 level, and I'm currently learning German and would be a strange mix between A2 and B2.
So.
