Eckstein — Restaurant in Cologne

After a lovely weekend in Cologne, this restaurant was our last stop. Food was decent and big portions despite having a stomach bug due to too much cream on my plate. Staff was nice until they told us that we couldn't pay the bill (after eating) with a for foreigner card (only German). That was a surprise as we are in the European Union. We asked them why this was not mention anywhere in the restaurantt, and why they didn't tell us as we had told them we were tourists before ordering We offered a transfer as we didn't have cash (last hours in Germany), but they refuse. They only offered us to go to the cash machine and take out money (cash fee to take out money 9 euros). We then offered an instant payment and they also refused. The waiter became cocky but after a racist comment about nationalities, he realised about his comment, he went indide and didn't come out any more. Two tables with German costumers told us we were right. They said it is ok to pay only with a German card but only if you know in advance as they some tourists and none of them are going to have a German card. A bar near by helped us to sort...

Eckstein's is a typical local hangout, 'Veedelskneipe', that upgraded their kitchens while back. Don't expect fine dining, but the food is great, the menu is small but interesting and seasonal. It has become my wife's favorite in the neighborhood because she loves the veal Schnitzel. Their panade has a twist and is different from the usual Vienna Schnitzel. Die Kölner Südstädtler kennen das Eckstein sicherlich schon sehr gut, für mich war es allerdings das erste Mal 😍 und ich fand‘s super. Die Linie 18 hält genau vor dem Restaurant an der Haltestelle Sülzburgstraße 👍🏽 Die Anbindung ist für KVB-, und Radfahrer jedenfalls super. Autofahrer dürften hingegen vergebens nach nem Parkplatz suchen. Der Service im Eckstein ist sehr freundlich, und gesprächig 😃 5 von 6 Personen in meiner Gruppe waren mit dem Essen mehr als zufrieden, eine war nur zufrieden denn ihr Fischgericht war zwar sehr lecker jedoch einwenig trocken. Ich hatte die Tagliatelle mit Rindfleisch, ich sag's euch, es war großartig. Ambiente: Innen schön geräumig, hohe Decken nicht beengend.
