It used to be different, so I want to write a new review. Of course, I'll leave the old one below, which I wrote a few years ago.
Today we were back at Bakalikon after 3 years. The interior is still the same and reminds me of those typical little shops in the Aegean region of my childhood, where you could find everything from bread to newspapers. The staff is also nice and friendly, you still feel the Greek hospitality, which we really appreciate. But what happened to the old good kitchen?
So, today we ordered some warm mezedes in advance. After my question was answered with “Yes, of course!”, whether Dolmadakia is homemade, we got some from the can. I didn't like it at all, because we don't like the taste of the pseudo-homemade "Paliria" brand or anything similar, regardless of the quality. The baked aubergines were good, although the giant aubergines are not my thing. The fried calamari was so-so, because it was deep-frozen, but I didn't expect anything better, because we are in Germany, so it was okay. The grilled artichoke hearts were out of the can again which was a real disappointment for me. Now to our main courses: The presentation with the sides was visually very nice. However, the fish fillet had absolutely no taste. And souvlaki on a thin wooden skewer looked like one square piece. The taste wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. For these reasons I was curious and asked the waiter if the chef is new. For a year or a little longer, he said, and I think that was the sticking point for us. In my memory a lot of dishes were different and homemade, which is not the fact at the moment. At that time we talked with the owners a lot but this time we didn't see anyone of them. You used to be invited for an ouzo or mastixa after the meal, even they used to drink with us. This time, no question, no such gesture and not even a goodbye before we’ve leaved the restaurant. Everything fine, it may be that we experienced a wrong day today. But for me it was a disappointment, so I really regretted it. And please just read what I wrote years ago with 5 stars:
“Great atmosphere, nice service, real restaurateurs from Thessaloniki, so the best tavern we have discovered in Europe (apart from GR, but comparable in any case). We actually felt at home. From now on, we are definitely...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Bakalikon Griechische Taverne, and I must say, the experience was thoroughly enjoyable. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the restaurant's attention to cleanliness and its inviting atmosphere, both of which I would happily give a five-star rating.
The menu offers a wide variety of Greek delicacies, and every dish served was not only generous in portion but also excellently presented, showcasing the care and authenticity the kitchen puts into every meal. While the food quality itself was a solid four out of five, with flavors that transport you straight to the heart of Greece, it was the overall dining experience that truly stood out.
The restaurant's atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making you feel as though you're dining among friends. The clean and well-maintained environment further enhances the experience, ensuring every meal is enjoyed in a comfortable setting.
Whether you're a lover of Greek cuisine or trying it for the first time, Bakalikon Griechische Taverne offers a memorable dining experience that combines delicious food, exceptional cleanliness, and a wonderful atmosphere. I highly recommend a visit to this charming taverna for anyone looking to enjoy a taste of Greece without...
Read moreWe had a reservation. The location is okay a little tricky to find if you don't know the place at all but very visible. We went at 7.30pm and we found parking in the neighborhood pretty easily. You go in and it like you traveled to Greece to your local favorite Tavernaki ( Greek small cozy restaurant). Greek music playing I like the Greek old cinema movies playing on the tvs (no volume of course). It's spacious, big tables comfortable chairs. One small problem for me was that the wooden tables had a stripe of wood horizontal across directly under the main piece of wood of the table making it a bit hard to fit your feet in a 90 degree angle but you work around it fine. The service stuff was amazing, friendly and funny but not funny in a rude/uncomfortable way. We felt very welcome and as if we were regulars there. Good drinks (white wine, tsipouro and retsina), the food was amazing (we got the Ola & Ola plate salat, Dakos salat 😍, Haloumi, Pommes, pita bread of course with garlic 👌🏽, Politiko souvlaki and lamp paidaki). Good flavors, very good ingredients, good combos. And at the end we also got some desserts (very tasty) after drinking...
