Grill and Green — Restaurant in Hamburg

I will start by saying the service staff was lovely, despite my rating.

This place has a system issue. The menu system with writing on the menu simply does not work, and every issue I observed started there. I will never understand modern new restaurants trying to reinvent the wheel.

The server who gave us the menus first had to explain how the system works, in this time he could have taken our order. Instead, he handed this to the gentleman behind the bar who then had to manually enter the order into the screen. This led to lots of back and forth extra communication, and time in which he was not making drinks. Then later I saw our server having to clean the menus. The entire system tripled the amount of work of the waiter, and was the reason our drinks took 40min to arrive, as the bar staff was entering orders rather than making drinks.

The system is silly at face value, why even have servers instead of screens if I am writing my order down anyways? Why is the person taking the order not the one entering it into the system?

It also leads to a lack of independence in the servers, I saw moments where 3 waiters had to discuss whether two people could sit down at a table (this happened twice and I was only there for 90min). Every waiter was running around without a complete picture or autonomy and had to ask the gentleman or gentlewoman behind the bar (I assume the managers) super simple questions, including the sharing of one single card machine amongst all 5 of them.

This also leads me to the next point, there was one waiter for each second table, but the system was so inefficient it took me almost 10 minutes to ask for salt from one of them. 5 wait staff, for 10 tables, is incredibly strange, inefficient, and expensive.

The food was ok, my burger was ordered medium (no medium rare option on the card you are allowed to tick from) but I received a very well done, quite dry, burger, after 45min. The sweet potato fries and halloumi burger were extremely undersalted, but cooked well. Overall, quite average but not great for the price.

Lastly, the restaurant does not understand their image. They are half funky modern 'fine' dining, half fast food, with the worst of both. I have to pay for ketchup, but I also have to stare at a just eat driver lining up right next to me. I get some lovely stoneware, but also a deep fry basket with paper inside it for the fries.

Overall, the grade could have been a 4 if the system was not so silly and obviously flawed, and if the restaurant had understood their own image, and a 5 if the burger was cooked as requested (and if I was allowed to request what I really wanted) and...

I'm short of good words about this place and 5 stars doesn't give it justice. Firstly, I think that the "Concept" is a huge part of the success of this place, for both the salads or the Burgers you get a menu on which you tick the toppings you want to add and scratch the ingredients you don't like. Utterly simple but extremely efficient. How many times do you hesitate because of one single ingredient, here you don't, the Scampi salad caught my attention and thanks to the concept I made it exactly to my taste. Secondly, the "Freshness", everything is made of quality ingredients prepared on the spot and therefore the taste is enhanced, the ingredients look and are super tasty and that is paramount when ordering a salad. Thirdly, the homemade Lemonades, ti was the hardest choice but again they are made fresh upon order, I picked the Pomegranate one and boy, I did not regret, with pomegranate, lemon juice and mint added to the soda water it was one of the most refreshing lemonade I ever drank. Fourthly, the staff and the place, the place has opened only 9 month ago and you can tell it already has built it's customer basis of locals, it has online orders coming through and they not only speak English but have an English menu, they are super nice and attentive to your needs. Fifthly the volume, I got carried away and made the mistake to order some home made french fries on the side but this was excessive, the salad is large, mine had rice and quinoa so it was very filling And last the price... seriously the salad with toppings -and they had the kindness to not count some because I removed a couple veggies (I won't count the fries because it was my mistake) with a super Lemonade (and the rest of the salad as take away), all that for about 21€, it's almost cheaper than free, what more to ask?

The only may super tiny issue, I was lucky that it was close by my hotel (5 minutes) but I feel they are a bit on the quiet side of the Neustadt area (Stadthausebrück station of the S-Bahn), so if you stay in a hotel in the vicinity (or not) DO take the time to go and see them, that won't be wasted.

We visited the restaurant on a normal Friday afternoon/night there are multiple tables outside and as well inside, we decided to sit outside where a kind waitress handed us the menu, on the drinks menu they offer a variety of self made lemonades and normal drinks as a coke for example… The food menu offers 5 burgers for every category of “normal”, special and vegetarian, you have then the option to make an X on which Burger you would like to eat and if you want to they offer to put special toppings in your burger, then you can choose what side you want to have here again there is a variety of options… For others who perhaps don’t want a burger there are other meals as e.g. bowls, pasta and more… Unfortunately as we were sitting outside we always had to wait some time before the waitress could take our order but the faster our food would arrive In my opinion the food was great and for a very fair price, we paid around 60€ for drinks, a burger with 3 sides and for both of us a delicious lava cake as dessert When I come visit Hamburg again I will definitely...
