Mensa city center Studierendenwerk Darmstadt — Restaurant in Hesse

Although the TU Darmstadt is the good quality university to study, the Mensa cannot provide you good lunches everyday.

First of all, the staff here is not so friendly and helpful. Most of the time when they see the foreign students they take it for granted that the students will understand German for sure. If they don't and speak English, the staff just ignores them and stays silent, thus no guidance/instruction is provided.

Secondly, there are 4 smaller canteens/restaurants where you can get different types of food in one Mensa complex: Two canteens on the left and right wings of the building from the front door, one cafeteria in the back side, and one more canteen selling pizzas and pastas on the right upstairs. However, there is no clear information/instruction to help you the exact locations of those canteens. All you can do is to follow the crowd or to explore the building by yourself.

Finally, the food in the Mensa has mediocre taste. Most of the students and university staff members stick to the Mensa because it provides OK food with low costs everyday. If there was one restaurant with better taste and same low price, everyone would switch to it instead of the current Mensa. Advice here: you can stick to the normal German food or fresh salads there but please don't pick up the rice. The rice (cheap rice) cooked in the Mensa is too horrible as it is too dry, separated grain and tastes...

Really terrible . I tried it again and the dishes were really disgusting I regret spending money on this. I also feel sorry for the food they ruined. I ended up leaving the whole dish. I could not really taste it anymore. was like a punishment. I chose spinat it was really the worst spinat dish I have eaten in my whole life. And followed by a disgusting dessert dish. Worse than the fish before. When I went back home I cooked a soap and egg and some carrots and wow the very simple food I cooked at home was much better . Never again to try this punishment. I hope they can import some Turkish or Chinese cheafs who can actually cook 😰 And yes "The Matrix" type of food in all Mensas...

Das Essen in der Mensa war schon immer sehr schlecht. Aber jetzt hat es der Betreiber geschafft, dieses unterirdische Niveau noch zu unterbieten, indem er außer Tiefkühlschnitzel und Tiefkühlbratwurst nur noch vegetarische Gerichte anbietet, wahrscheinlich um seinen Gewinn zu maximieren. Die Profitgier des Betreibers lässt sich auch an der Portionsgröße ablesen: Die Portionen sind sehr klein und machen nicht satt. Selbst beim falschen "Parmesankäse" für die "Pasta" wird gegeizt (Im Übrigen hat das kulinarisch mit echten Parmesan und echter Pasta nichts zu tun, was hier offenbart wird und ist ein Verbrechen am immateriellen Weltkulturerbe Italiens). Insgesamt ist es eine kulinarische Vollkatastrophe, was hier an Essen angeboten wird. Man hat als Student und Universitätsmitarbeiter den Eindruck, dass die Leute, die dieses "Essen" produzieren, denken, dass man selbst ein Schwein ist. Eine absolute Verschwendung von Steuergeldern.
