Great Coffee, Unwelcoming Attitude — Especially Towards Families.
I used to really like Tanpopo Konditorei Café. Their coffee is excellent, and their cakes and pastries strike a great balance. They are simple, not overly sweet, and very enjoyable. It felt like a cozy, local spot that was worth returning to. Unfortunately, I will not be coming back and cannot recommend it to others, especially to anyone with a baby.
We visited on a rainy day with our 2-month-old in a pram, hoping to enjoy a quiet break indoors. The café had enough space and was not crowded. However, shortly after we entered, someone from behind the counter rushed over and abruptly told us that prams were not allowed inside. There was no greeting, no explanation, and no concern for the weather or the fact that we are regulars. It was simply a blunt refusal.
There was clearly enough room for the pram without disrupting other customers, and the weather made it especially inconvenient to be turned away. The staff showed no willingness to accommodate or even communicate politely. The experience was unwelcoming and unnecessarily hostile, which contradicts the atmosphere the café appears to offer.
It is a shame because the food and drinks are genuinely good. But service and attitude are just as important. I will not return, and I will advise others, particularly families, to...
Read moreVery disappointing. Came here on recommendation for a excellent cake and matcha. Well. Matcha is not a real matcha but a premixed mixture with sugar - so a no go. I genuinely do not understand how can this be even an option - it’s sweet, loaded with carbs, and absolutely ruins the benefits a “clean” matcha tea would bring. The next reasonable option was a green tea - one would expect a larger selection provided the multiple references of the café to Japan. The cake I’ve tried was a matcha roulade, which was OK although much on the sweeter side. An average place without a defined jdentity and spirit that offers nothing extra besides adding matcha into their cakes.
The disappointment from the matcha and green tea is too strong for me, so reflected in the review. To me, this place was not worth visiting.
The indoors space is rather small, not very cozy and lacking any sort of consistent interior and style.
There is NO toilet for the customers. In a coffee / pastry shop with seating. Seriously?
The positive side is the staff, who is very friendly and professional at the same time. Good job there.
Not recommended.
Not reflected in my review, just FYI: There are also no cakes sweetened with a sugar alternative, limited options on gluten-free and...
Read moreMy favorite cosy coffee shop in the neighborhood. I love that they offer plant based milk and their cappuccino with oat milk is delicious. In the mornings, it goes well with a mini croissant 🥐 and in the afternoon, I sometimes enjoy of one their delicious cakes. 😋 They are all home made in the back of the bakery and the staff is super friendly. I can’t wait to start my day at Tanpopo sitting at one of the tables outside while watching people go by and enjoying my favorite drink
Edit July 2023: they now offer egg croissants and they are delicious!! Just know that the eggs filling is mixed with milk so not suitable for lactose intolerant people. You can also pay with card starting at 5 Euro and in summer, they have...
