Let's cut to the chase... This was the worst Mexican food I've eaten anywhere in the world. I'd almost always say that even bad Mexican food is better than none. But today proves that theory dead wrong. This isn't Mexican food. It also isn't Tex-Mex. Hell, it's not even Mexikan-isch! It's Mexi-can't. Thanks, Danny Trejo
Let's get serious now. The chicken enchiladas are covered in a sauce that has the same consistency and flavor as a thick, cream-based tomato pasta sauce. Yes, pasta. And in said sauce, the flour tortillas go completely flaccid. Mmmm... Nothing like limp chicken in floppy tortillas drenched in pasta sauce! Woof... It's bad. And the complete opposite of what a traditional Mexican red sauce should taste like.
I also had chips and salsa, which came with a garlic sauce. The garlic sauce was fine, but the salsa shouldn't be called salsa. It has a simple tomato flavor and that's it. Where are the nuanced flavors? Where's the heat? Look's around the restaurant Where's a better appetizer!? Sigh...
Oh, and then there's the yellow rice that comes with it. What's it taste like? Nothing. No spices, no flavor, and hardly any texture. Think of the rice as a thousand little reminders of how much your dinner sucks.
To be fare, I did eat most of the dinner. But that's only because I've walked dozens of miles in the past few days and I was ravenous. And yes, I said miles. I know I'm in Germany and kilometers are king, but a meal this regretful does not deserve the accurate means of measurement. Get the Mexican recipes right and I'll get my International System of Units right.
At least the mountains outside are pretty. And there's a vending machine nearby with sausages and macaroni salad. So that's good. Plus, you won't have to deal with all the waiters and their bad attitudes. But I guess if my food sucked this bad, I'd have a bad...
Read moreEl Puente – A Unique Take on Mexican Food in Oberammergau
El Puente is one of those places that seems to get very mixed reviews—some people say it used to be great, others still swear by it, and a few say it’s not really worth it anymore. So, I went in with open expectations while on a work trip with a large group.
What I found was that while the food quality itself was good, the dishes aren’t exactly what you’d expect from a traditional Mexican restaurant—especially if you’re familiar with authentic Mexican cuisine outside of Europe. It’s more of a European twist on Mexican food, with some creative liberties taken. So if you’re expecting real-deal tacos or street-style flavors, you might be caught off guard.
That said, we still had a really nice time. The atmosphere was fun, the service was solid, and it ended up being a great place to enjoy a relaxed meal with colleagues. Just go in knowing that it’s “Mexican-inspired” rather than authentically Mexican.
Bottom Line:
El Puente serves good-quality food with a European-Mexican fusion twist. It’s not traditional Mexican by global standards, but it’s a fun, friendly spot—especially for groups. Worth checking out, just temper your expectations if...
Read moreThe food is ok, nothing great. But in terms of service this is the worst restaurant I have visited till date. We were totally discriminated by the waiter because we are from a different country. The waiter, Dennis, kept asking us every 10 mins whether we were finished. When we asked what's going on, he started saying something about how he needed the table for next round of guest. I mean which restaurant does that!! He didn't let us finish our last drink.
Furthermore, initially we requested for a particular table and he said that the table was only available for four persons. Later, we saw a couple, just like us, got the table. When we asked about it he changed his narrative that the table was reserved for 4 people. We later realized that it was most probably a lie as well, as other than the couple no one showed up and the table was not tabled as 'reserved'.
All in all, avoid the restaurant if you are from another country. In case you can't definitely avoid the...
