Linderhof Palace (German: Schloss Linderhof) is a Schloss in Germany, in southwest Bavaria near Ettal Abbey. It is the smallest of the three palaces built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the only one which he lived to see completed. Ludwig already knew the area around Linderhof from his youth when he had accompanied his father King Maximilian II of Bavaria on his hunting trips in the Bavarian Alps. When Ludwig II became King in 1864, he inherited the so-called Königshäuschen from his father, and in 1869 began enlarging the building. In 1874, he decided to tear down the Königshäuschen and rebuild it on its present-day location in the park. At the same time three new rooms and the staircase were added to the remaining U-shaped complex, and the previous wooden exterior was clad with stone façades. The building was designed in the style of the second rococo-period. Between 1863 and 1886, a total of 8,460,937 marks was spent constructing Linderhof.
Although Linderhof is much smaller than Versailles, it is evident that the palace of the French Sun-King Louis XIV (who was an idol for Ludwig) was its inspiration. The staircase, for example, is a reduction of the famous Ambassador's staircase in Versailles, which would be copied in full in Herrenchiemsee. Stylistically, however, the building and its decor take their cues from the mid-18th century Rococo of Louis XV, and the small palace in the Graswang was more directly based on that king's Petit Trianon on the Versailles grounds.[2] The symbol of the sun that can be found everywhere in the decoration of the rooms represents the French notion of absolutism that, for Ludwig, was the perfect incorporation of his ideal of a God-given monarchy with total royal power. Such a monarchy could no longer be realised in Europe in the second half of the nineteenth century. The bedroom was important to the ceremonial life of an absolute monarch; Louis XIV of France used to give his first (lever) and last audience (coucher) of the day in his bedchamber. In imitation of Versailles, the bedroom is the largest chamber of Linderhof Palace. By facing north, however, the Linderhof bedroom inverts the symbolism of its Versailles counterpart, showing Ludwig's self-image as a "Night-King."
The location of the palace near Ettal Abbey again presents another interesting point. Because of its architecture Ludwig saw the church of the monastery as the room where the holy grail was preserved. This fact connects the idea of a baroque palace to the one of a "medieval" castle such as Neuschwanstein and reminds of the operas of Richard Wagner whose patron Ludwig was.

As a mother of five children, ranging in age from 15 to 1 year old, I can't say enough about our wonderful experience at Linderhof Palace. Visiting in the month of February allowed us to see this stunning gem in a beautiful winter setting.
From the moment we arrived, the friendly staff made us feel welcome and accommodated our large family with ease. The grounds were impeccably maintained, and the palace itself was like something out of a fairytale. The kids were absolutely mesmerized by the beautiful architecture and the snow-covered gardens.
The guided tour of the palace was informative and engaging, keeping the attention of all of my children (even the wiggly ones). They were fascinated by the opulent decor and the stories of King Ludwig II. The older kids were able to appreciate the historical significance of the palace, while the younger ones simply marveled at the grandeur of it all.
After the tour, we spent time exploring the expansive gardens, where the kids had a blast running around. The snow-capped mountains in the distance provided a breathtaking backdrop for our family photos.
We also enjoyed a warm cup of hot chocolate at the on-site café, which was a welcome treat on a chilly day. The staff was accommodating and patient with our large group, and we never felt rushed or unwelcome.
Overall, our visit to Linderhof Palace was an unforgettable experience for our family. It was a perfect mix of history, culture, and natural beauty that appealed to all of my children. I highly recommend this attraction to any family looking for a memorable and educational outing. We can't wait to visit again in the future.

We were a party of five and went for the Alpine slide and fun. There is a lot of activity in the are and the views are spectacular! The Alpine slide was so much fun! It is really long and you are able to really gain some speed going down. Would highly recommend. The staff were friendly enough and they spoke enough English for us to get by. The price is good for what you get. Would recommend and we will be back when we visit the area.

We rode the chairlift up, ate at the restaurant up top, then took the alpine coaster down. It was so fun! The food was great, very much exceeded my expectations. We did it twice within two days, the first time with no issues. The second time, we had to prove my 3 year olds age in order for them to ride the coaster. So, if your child is small, bring a passport or proof of their age! The playground at the top was also awesome!

Great place for the entire family. The ride up the mountain in the chair lift is quick. The food at the mountain restaurant has great quality and a very good selection of different dishes. For kids there is a large adventure playground, a wooden marble game in the woods and even an archery park. Take the alpine coaster on the way down for a thrilling closure of a fun day in the mountains.

Chair lift to the top of the mountain then a high speed race to the bottom, all on a very secure rail track. Everyone in an individual cart, reaching speeds up to 45 km. Caution required as some people are very slow and others very fast. We where hit from behind when lady in front of us crawled down the track and youngster behind us didn't slow down.

Summary: Wonderful activity, incredible views, worth the price, highly recommended
Details:
🅿️The drive up to this location is beautiful, and the car park is large so there is plenty of space for many. Parking was €2 for an hour, and €5 for anything over. It’s possible to do it in an hour should the queues be short, but why rush just for a €3 saving!
🚾There are toilets at the entrance to the alpine coaster’s ticketing station that are well kept.
✅ The tickets are €15.50 for the coaster and the chairlift- the walk is NOT SHORT if you decide to climb up to the top! It would take hours to reach the top and the hike wasn’t well kept- it was overgrown in places. Highly recommend getting the chairlift!
🚠 the ride on the ski lift/chairlift was absolutely beautiful. So relaxing, a really chilled pace and the views behind you are outstanding.
⚠️ The people running the ski lift didn’t tell us to put the bar down above us and to keep our feet on it in order to keep it down, so remember to do this as there’s nothing stopping you from falling otherwise. The height of the ski lift gets quite intense toward the top, so be careful. The journey on the ski lift was about 20-25 minutes.
🌳 when you get to the top, you hop off the chair quickly and exit to the left. The ski lift doesn’t stop, so you have to disembark fast. You then walk to the right and join the queue for the alpine coaster. It was around a 15 minute wait to get seated in a cart. There are instructions in many languages, including English. Just belt up and tuck everything in- no bags are allowed and must be sent down on the chair lift.
🏎️ The journey down is excellent. You can go at your own pace, but they recommend leaving 25m between you and the car in front. Unfortunately, somebody in front went SO slowly and it slightly ruined the experience as I wanted it to be a thrilling, fast paced experience. You can go slowly though, especially to satisfy scared children!
📸there is a camera close to the end after a steep decline and you have the option of buying the picture at the end.
A great experience.

So fun! If you are within an hour of the area, definitely stop by for this. If you can get there at opening time, even better. We purchased 2x up the lift and down the coaster, I think total around 84€ for 4 people. A little pricey but a ton of fun! The ride up is beautiful. Our first trip down there was no one in front of us so we could go as fast as we were brave enough to go. For our second ride, we decided to linger at the top and enjoy some Austrian cuisine. That was a mistake because the line built up and for our second ride down we waited about 20 minutes. The people in front of us were a school group and these girls were terrified to go more than a snails pace and ruined it for everyone behind them. The operator kept yelling down at them to go. It gave you time though to appreciate the incredible scenic views around you, though.
One thing I did not enjoy, the waiter at the restaurant was nice, however, after our meal was through, he asked how we enjoyed our Austrian cuisine. Not wanting to be rude I said it was wonderful (even though it could have been better) and he replied with ‘much better than your American food. Americans have the worst food culture.’ It ended up being a good lesson for my children about how what you say can be rude or offensive to other cultures, but being from the American service industry, I would kindly suggest sticking to positive feedback. We know we don’t have to leave tips, but we will if we find great service.

Fabulous summer activity with kids. You take a ski lift up the mountain for about 15 minutes, which is itself a really beautiful experience. At the top of the mountain there is a play area, restaurant, park, and restrooms. On the day we visited, there was only a 5 minute wait to board a tobaggan for an exhilarating slide down the mountain. The ride is actually quite long. I didn’t time it, but it felt like 3-4 minutes. The slide is very, very fast, but you have control over your speed with handbreaks. A ticket for 3 trips up the ski lift and tobaggan down was €45. The tobaggan does auto-brake for you at certain steep turns, and is locked into the track so it feels safe. One tip is that some parents and their kids will go slow. If you want to go fast, ask the guide at the top to give more time between the tobaggan in front of you and when you start, or you’ll end up slowing down on the slide. Toward the end of the slide, there is an automated photo, which you can purchase at the end of the slide. The location and scenery are beautiful. Try to arrive when they open around 10am or 11am, as it can get crowded with groups by 1pm.

It was a fun experience. Would totally recommend trying at least once.
You are not allowed to hold onto your phone and take videos/pictures during the ride. Anyway, the alpine coaster goes so fast, you won't even want to hold your phone. You also wouldn't want to slow down just to take a video/picture and have someone at the back catch up to you.
The controls at the sides of the seat for the alpine coaster ride was straightforward. Push down/forward to accelerate and pull up/backward to brake.
After taking a chairlift up, if you're carrying a backpack, the operator would send your backpack down the chairlift, which you can collect it after your alpine coaster ride down. You can only take a small sling bag with you on the alpine coaster. Caps/hats are also not allowed to be worn during the ride.
There were plenty of parking spaces. I paid 2 euros for less than an hour spent there.
