POSEIDONEION fish tavern - grill — Restaurant in Katerini Municipality

Unexpectedly good Having just been underwhelmed by our hotel and overwhelmed by the number of tourists we asked where we could have a nice fish-food lunch and were directed to the Poseidonion… It’s location is just perfect, the first tables are maybe 6 meters from the waves and although the area around is very crowded the ambience is that of an out of the way good taverna albeit with fish on the menu. So; good vibes… Three hungry adults and two probably hungrier and, certainly, more impatient young boys ordered starters, salad and boiled greens and seafood and because of its location (it is where the worst tourist-trap would be) we were sort of resigned to eating a barely satisfactory but filling fare. We were utterly and unexpectedly wrong! The salad was fresh as can be and the boiled greens were perfectly timed to stay bright green and tasty! Auspicious start and then came the fried zucchini and eggplant both crispy on the outside but still succulent inside, the french fries that were obviously freshly hand-cut and sprinkled with oregano and just as we were commenting on the excellent taste we got the perfectly broiled octapus tentacle, the fried calamari (they give you the choice of foreign or domestic, greek is 1 euro more but it’s certainly worth it), the fried and shockingly tasty mussels, that felt as if they still carried some of the sea inside them and the broiled sardines that had already been filleted (again, unexpectedly and to the joy of the two boys and the undersigned fussy adult…)! I have to say, everything exceeded our expectations by so far that we just had to apologize to the staff for being unbelievers when we walked-in and, although we were already stuffed to the gills, we proceeded to order another round of mussels, octopus and fries that we ate leisurely just for the sport of it! The staff (an older head-waiter and a good number of younger helpers), even before our apologies, was clean, ready to kindly answer any questions, understanding to the needs and peculiarities of children, fast and efficient. After we (grudgingly, again, the peculiarities of young children, who get easily bored) finally asked for the bill, a huge plate of ice-cream and pastry was offered us by the establishment. This gesture is common in most restaurants in Greece nowadays but quality and quantity vary widely and this was both good and plentiful, in my book that and the amount on the bill was a great parting shot combination. Because, although that good, it wasn’t that expensive, about 27 € per person, quite a reasonable amount if you take into account the seafront location and the quality both of food and the service. Situated on the seafront with a fantastic view of the well known ‘sleeping lady’ mountain range, with us you will enjoy a well cooked and reasonably priced lunch or dinner. Come along in the early evening, as the sunset view from the taverna is not to be missed! Your dining experience will be one made from the freshest local produce found in the “Agora“, cooked daily in our “Kouzina“, and served to you with a friendly smile. The person who greeted us was very nice. He adapted his language based on where we came from. We sat at a nice table on the beach. The food was delicious and after that we received a refreshing desert (watermelon with tasty 🍦on the side). Would recommend!

New edit: eaten here again, same great experience, but now with photos. One of the best moussaka's I've eaten and also one of the best frappe i've tried. Staff was polite and respectful as always. The stuffed pepper with feta was delicious and the shrimp spaghetti was fresh and tasty! Will come here again for sure until...
