We stopped by here during our vacation on Crete and just wanted a little refreshment. The taverna is beautifully situated and looks lovely with the decoration and all the flowers. The staff were very friendly when they thought we wanted to have a main meal. When we only ordered an ice coffee and a yogurt with honey, the waitress got visibly annoyed. When the dish came, we were a little irritated: The bowl was lovelessly prepared and served with so much honey that everything overflowed. We've been to Crete many times and know that many Greeks mean well when it comes to portions, but here it was clear that they had hoped for a better deal. To be fair: The ice coffee was good. Of course, it's possible that the incident was an exception, but we were rather put off and won't be back. PS: We were here in 2019.

Feel part of the family at this lovely taverna! We called maria & kostas to ask if they had a spare table, and also if they knew of a taxi which could pick us up from the next village. Kostas said to call him when we were ready and he would come to collect us! Once we arrived at his restaurant, he showed us around his mini-museum filled with pictures of his family, all who have lived in the same house for generations. The minute you arrive, you feel at home. We tried the moussaka (cooked by kostas mother) and lamb chops (grilled on an open fire) both were delicious. Greek salad, tzatziki, bread all lovely too. We would recommend anyone visiting Spili to stop by Maria & Kostas, they are a lovely, welcoming family who know how to cook! Thankyou again Kostas for your hospitality!

My most beautiful Cretan experience. I could say that the location is wonderful, the grilled lamb was divinely cooked, the tomatoes were the best I have eaten in Crete, the house red wine just as much, and the price in the end among the lowest I have encountered, but that is not the only reason. The best thing was the time I spent at the end of dinner chatting and drinking Raki with Maria and her beautiful and friendly daughters, but above all having had the honour of meeting Kostas, whose manners may be a little rough but who is extraordinarily deep and authentic like the tavern he runs. Thank you for this unforgettable and incomparably Cretan evening

I was really looking forward to dining at Taverna Maria & Kostas i was there with my husband and my son—the staff were genuinely warm and welcoming, which made it all the more disappointing that the overall experience fell short.

The Greek salad was missing basic ingredients: no pepper, white onions instead of red, and the tomatoes were overripe. The salad was served very cold, like it had been prepared days in advance. The feta salad came with just a single block of feta and only three olives, which felt more like a garnish than a proper dish.

The chicken was another letdown—roughly cut, with fatty pieces still attached and skin that had visible oil bubbles. It looked and tasted rushed and unrefined.

To make matters worse, the outdoor lemon garden, which seemed like a lovely spot at first, was full of mosquitoes, and the smoke from the grill was blowing straight through the area. We ended up having to change seats just to breathe comfortably.

And for all this, the prices were surprisingly high, which made the quality even more disappointing.

Again, I want to emphasize that the staff were truly kind and hospitable—but the food and overall experience need serious improvement. With some attention to detail and better value for money, this place could have...

If you’re ever in Spili, this grill restaurant is a must-visit! Arrived yesterday and visited Maria and Kostas grill, the moment you walk in, you’re wrapped in the warm and welcoming vibe that makes you feel like part of the family felt like home. Philoxenia and love at the maximum. The atmosphere is relaxed, and full of Cretan charm, perfect for a laid-back meal. The food amazing! The grill is the star of the show, with perfectly cooked meat that melts in your mouth. Whether it’s tender lamb, juicy chicken, or savory pork, everything with flavor and seasoned with local herbs that brings out the best in each bite. Portions are generous, I love the grill in Crete no words..... Greek Salad exactly how I was dreaming of, fresh juicy tastefull red tomatoes, tasty onions, pepers feta and olive oil with herbs .... Yummy!!! Whether you sit inside or outside on the patio surrounded with the amazing green plants, in any case you will enjoy it. Thank you, Maria, Kostas and the whole crew for the great time and delicious meal!!! See...
