ASTERIX CAFE-BAR — Restaurant in Municipality of Andros

A proper place. Unpretentious and essentially Greek. Relaxed informal welcoming and typically Greek cafe bar which successfully caters for locals and visitors in search of a simple coffee or beer, a snack or inexpensive meal or a chance to see televised sport. Its location is ideal, facing the harbour across the road from the main beach and next to the largest (free) car park. Asterix caters for everyone from the very young to the retired and everyone in between. It is family run and family friendly and sometimes hosts children's parties. (The kids can run off energy in the secure play area next door.) Older people gather for a leisurely chat and workers drop in for a frappe during breaks. Asterix is open for breakfasts, caters for beach users during the day and sports fans into the evening and becomes a (cocktail) bar into the night. It also opens all year round. We were unfortunately served undercooked chicken nuggets from the children’s menu, which were raw in the middle. This was intended for our child, making the situation especially concerning. While the staff member serving us was polite and apologetic, it was disappointing that the chef did not come out personally to acknowledge the issue, leaving it instead to the waitress who was not at fault. The restaurant did the right thing by refunding the meal, but this does not excuse the lack of care in food preparation. Had our child suffered from food poisoning or salmonella, we would have had no choice but to report the incident to the Food Standards Agency. Without doubt the best bar on the island for us personally. Having frequently visited the island and got to know the owners it's a camp for us. Walking down from the house is approximately 14 floors of a high rise building so we dont want to be traipsing up and down all day so we take our stuff down.. get a spot on the beach and head into Asterix as and when required. They always treat the kids like royalty, and always willing to help us with our pigeon Greek. Most of the staff speak good english which helps get across service. Its reasonable for price and the selection of good food and great variety of drinks is very helpful throughout a day. It gets lively of an evening and is a decent hotspot to start and finish...
