Kimata — Restaurant in Municipality of Apokoronas

We went in the month of May/ June, on a Tuesday evening, exploring the local culture and gastronomy. At this time it was not much crowded, we were served by two young staff members. We ordered calamares and a steak, white/ red wine and a few cocktails. The wine was not at the right temperature (lukewarm to warm). Also the Pisang and certain seafood were out of stock after a wedding party had taken place. The steak was well baked, but tasted not meat, the calamari were lean overcooked shellfish. Finally we ordered two coffees and some desert to give it a second chance. We got the coffee, but after fifteen minutes the staff told us the ice cream was out. Unfortunately they seem to be going through the motions with the food without achieving very good results. I honestly don't know how someone can make Kleftiko with all right ingredients but with such boring flavours. It seems that everything was chucked together in a bowl and microwaved, nothing seemed to have been cooked long and slow together. The lamb was chewey, not meltingly soft, and had very little flavour. The cretan salad we had as a starter was nice. My partners chicken souvlaki also had very dry chicken and her chips were tough. One of the first places we visited for dinner on our holiday to Kalyves, I couldn't have been more impressed. My partner had the fried Feta for starter and I had the mixed fried vegetables - both starters fantastic. I then had the traditional pastitsio which I first had on a visit to Crete 16 years ago.. this one surpassed the memory of my first pastitsio! My partner had the pork souvlaki and thoroughly enjoyed this also. We shared 500ml red wine for the attractive price of €5 and after complimentary raki and chocolate brownie desert the grand total for the meal was €43 - absolutely amazing value for money and the food was top tier.
