I love hole-in-the-wall or off-the-beaten-track food nooks. Eat (with) the local food/people. I much prefer no menu to tourist menu. Simple is good. Homemade is great.
However, wow. I should have left when I first asked the lady working there if I could sit down to eat and drink something and she glared at me like it was the biggest inconvenience in the world. But, there was another woman who said yes, so I sat down, and she brought me what we agreed to be "fish and a Greek salad" Unfortunately, then she went away and it was just Glaring Lady left. It was almost 15:00, but there were others still eating, boh.
Fried fish were nice. The Greek salad was on the expensive side and not good (tomatoes and feta, nothing special; half of it was just white onion).
I was polite and while I feel guilty for not being able to communicate in Greek, c'mon. I was genuinely afraid this woman would slap me when I asked her if I could pay with card (20 EUR is an okay transaction amount, no?), but after complaining to some other girl sitting at a table for a while, she came back with a POS.
Bathroom was lacking all sorts of paper and soap. Cleanliness, not very inspiring.
Boh. It was honestly the rudest service experience I had in Greece in this month. If you don't want to deal with tourists of any sort, just don't or otherwise at least put a minimum of fake effort into it. Maybe you don't need to smile or say thank you, but at least don't spit at people with your eyeballs.
For 20EUr and 20 minutes of awkwardness of the lunch experience (obviously I was the only girl/foreigner there and that's my usual life story but doesn't mean it needs to be awkward...), I would much rather have gone to a more tourist-friendly place for both experience, atmosphere, and price point for value. That's probably the first time I...
Read moreCraving for something like a home cooked meal? This is the place! No menu. Omakase style.. sort of.. just say what you like (e.g. shrimps, octopus, fish, omelette, calamari, etc.) We literally sat on the road when we asked if we could seat outdoors. Great food. Cheap prices with the locals sitting around chatting. Not for fussy eaters please.. if you expect dining services, don't visit here to pretend you wish to experience the...
Read moreCame here for lunch by myself and had sardines, salad and a soft drink. When it came to pay they discussed between themselves before telling me it was €20, more expensive than the equivalent in one of the restaurants on the front. Maybe ask the prices of things when you order. This kind of thing is luckily quite rare in Greece but I guess Gytheio sees a lot...
