I always look for authentic places when traveling… Sorry this place is not one of them,I was hopping I was wrong and gave them two chances.. This place was recommended by someone and of course I read reviews right after. Sounded like a place with quality although not knowing the menu and prices was a bit like gambling.. I don’t like to gamble but I still went.. First visit the older man (one of the owners) Came up to us(me and my wife) And started the conversation of course. After few back and forth we decided to sit down. First he said the price 40 euros , I said we don’t drink alcohol he replied with the same price the i repeated that we don’t drink alcohol he then said 35 euros. Another thing he said, you don’t like you don’t pay, yeah right . Sounds like a nice trap.. Appetisers came quick and lots of different varieties, some tasted good, some ok. I was ready for the main course which he told us that it was a rabbit from his farm. Again a surprise, couldn’t really tell what part of the rabbit it was.Taste and flavour wise was ok. I talked to the man the owner that we want come back and try a wild fish .he told us to come back in two days so we did. Firs he said that he couldn’t find a wild fish and offered farmed fish. We where a little upset but decided to stay . It was lots of appetisers again wich was very nice except few where started to spoil. I could tell when it happens by trying or by smelling or even looking at it. Also very important I asked not use microwave.which they did anyway. Second course (300 gram fish for 2 people) Came cold and it tasted like it was cocked couple of hours prior. So half of the things we didn’t eat as well as the fish. So it was a big disappointment. We wanted to leave as quick as possible so I asked for the check.I was waiting for the owner to say no like it no pay but instead he asked for the money. My conclusion: That this place claims to be authentic Greek place with nice owners. Sorry to say we didn’t feel the authenticity. And honestly is missing as well.. I wish the restaurant only...
Read moreThis local Taverna is a traditional taverna near a traditional house which you can also visit. At the restaurant part there is no menu, no choice options (besides you are allergic and you tell them!), you eat what they put on the table just like at grandmas house and you will leave with full stomach just like at grandma.
It is a family business run by a couple over 70 by their look. They cook based on the season and based on what they have, all kind of traditional food and there love is on the plate.
We were 3 people, we got 6 different plates of starters, warm and cold also with amaaazing home made bread and endless cold water. Then a big plate of main dish arrived, 2 different meats and couscous. We were already full but then also a dessert came which was the cherry on the top. A sweet local cake slice. Also I asked for a beer which was included.
The traditional house is like a little museum with old tools and decorations and in the food basically you pay to price of the entrance fee from my point of view.
The price is fix (it is not written anywhere so we also suggest them to write it somehow so you can know how to count with), it was 23 euro per person for the whole lunch. It is true that from like 18 euros you can get a good lunch on the island, BUT the care, the experience, the little museum house and the home made good quality definitely worth this price.
In all I highly recommend to visit them and I can say from the whole island it was our best...
Read moreA very nice and traditional Greek Taverna, which is getting almost impossible to find, especially on bigger and more touristic islands of Greece.. a must when you are in Kefalos! The food: First we were a little bit confused, because you get no menu, we could just choose our drinks.. (try the homemade lemonade!) After that, we got first greek salad and tasty fried vegetables buffer and bread, then grilled egg-plant/aubergine, cocked courgette/zucchini with different herbs, and a puree of whatever (we still don't know, but it was delicious!).. we were already full, but after that a plate of pork with couscous... After that we had to stop cause we couldn't eat anything more! But the dessert would have been either something sweet or fruits and I bet, also delicious! And the price for all of that? 30€ for two persons... Almost nothing, if you think about the taste and what such a variety would have cost in a different restaurant or country...
The staff: A older woman and a older man served us very friendly and in English that was okay (I've heard worse from much younger people in Greece)
The place: A nice, well renovated house with a small veranda to sit on, covered with plants. A room behind is showing a traditional room of an old house, very cute!
Conclusion: Best tavern you can find in Kefalos and maybe on the...
