Usually, when staying in an area for a while, I choose a base, somewhere I feel comfortable and welcome. Usually, I would go for an old fashioned taverna, but this time I was lucky to drop on to a real gem. Although completely modern, it otherwise ticked all the boxes. I came across FICUS by accident on a hot afternoon, drawn by the sight of the gleaming beer tap prominent on the bar. After meeting the Anglo Greek family that runs the restaurant, they couldn't get rid of us. I spent much of my time talking to each staff member and after our first lazy afternoon, I watched them go efficiently into action. While not situated on the beach or the main road, I could see many passing visitors being drawn in, and soon the place was full. At that time my daughter and I were staying at the other side of Kefalos and on the long walk back to our apartment, I saw that, in comparison, none of the other restaurants were doing any business. Next day, we booked a table and I had one of the best meals I have had in many a year, choosing lamb. Next day I talked with the young chef and hung around all day to see what else made the place so popular. I saw that the staff were all family and their children were always close. I saw that the bar was popular with ex-pats and locals alike. that evening again I saw the family dynamic at work as they worked smoothly and efficiently to make their many customers happy. They even helped us to find accommodation nearby. We ate there again on our last evening and were not disappointed.
