Quintessence:
Great restaurant with a great view over parts of Kos. It's a long, stony and steep way to walk up to the restaurant, so make sure you have time and are in good condition. The food was affordable, the service was friendly and polite, and the bathrooms were clean!
In detail:
I walked up to Metoxi Cafe with a friend after descending from Mount Dikeos. It was a long, stony and steep way up to the restaurant. So this is not the restaurant to walk up to if you're really exhausted. Alternatively you could also drive up to the restaurant. Since we walked, it took us some time to reach the restaurant. But when we finally arrived at Metoxi Cafe we were rewarded with an amazing view over parts of Kos. When we entered the restaurant there were only three other guests, but it was off-peak season.
We had a seat outside and ordered a bottle of water, the Dakos, Dolmadakia, Saganaki and Meat Balls. We were served the dakos first and we enjoyed it very much. The bread was very crunchy and in combination with the tomatoes and cheese this dish was very refreshing yet still filling! The dolmadakia was served lukewarm and the meatballs and saganaki were served hot. All dishes were very delicious and sold for affordable prices. After finishing our food we were served two pieces of baklava for free.
The service was very friendly and polite and felt very well advised ordering the meatballs!
Also the bathrooms...
Read moreMUST SEE! Great place to contemplate the surrounding islands and the sunset, in a more than 200° unobstructed view, drinking a beer or having something to eat, after a walk in the forest. Not easy to access by car, very steep dirt road, you need a good car and good driving skills to go up there. Easier to access on foot from the village center (ca.25 minutes) or the small church at Kefalovryssi (ca.10 minutes), where you will find a space to park your car for some time. As for the selection of food, it's basic but it's really fresh and tasty. Plus the owner, Michalis, is a great guy and has the most welcoming smile. Ask for the ravani with ice cream for desert. Sometimes there is also sokolatopita ( a chocolate "pie" but actually a chocolate cake with syrup)
Edit: Food gets better and better with time! All home made , pork meat is absolutely fantastic (pork meat in Greece is always well done). Be careful though, he serves it on a bed of onions and parsley, if you are not fan of that ask him not to put it, I always do.
Edit: The access road has been repaired and it's easier to go up there. Still a dirt...
Read moreBefore going all the way up, we checked the Metoxa website to see if they were open. The website was open!! So we walked for over an hour to the top only to find ourselves in front of a closed road. So we call just to be sure. A friendly man answered us and she in English that they were open. So we walked along the closed road and then stood in front of a locked gate. We thought maybe they hadn't opened the gate yet because of the roadblock. Suddenly a very angry Greek man comes up to us, shouting at us only in Greek with a gesture of go away. We understand that if they were closed and a mistake was made, we would need to be notified. But the way this man railed at us made no sense. Unfortunately an unpleasant experience with this business while we had heard so much...
