If you’re traveling in Greece and craving an authentic, seaside culinary experience, 5 Steps in the Sand in Paralia Sykia is an absolute must.

Built into the mountainside and cascading down toward the sea, this stunning restaurant offers multiple tiers of tables, each with breathtaking views over Sykia Bay, sailboats gently swaying in the water, and the surrounding hilltops. The setting alone is worth the trip—but the food takes it to a whole new level.

We loved it so much, we came back two nights in a row. Every dish we tried was unbelievably fresh and expertly prepared. The Red Porgy (φαγκρί) was grilled to perfection, the octopus tender with just the right char, and the house salad a vibrant mix of local flavors. The eggplant dip, garlic dip, zucchini fritters, stuffed vine leaves, and grilled Kalamari were all bursting with flavor. Even the simple Amaranthus greens were elevated to something special. And don’t miss the house wine—it pairs beautifully with everything.

After spending a lovely day at the beach, we decided to stop at 5 Steps in the Sand for lunch, drawn primarily by the stunning seaside view. While the location and ambiance are undeniably beautiful, I have to be honest that nearly all of my stars are going to the view alone, as the food was quite disappointing. What We Ordered Chicken Souvlaki - This was decent and probably the best item we tried. Nothing spectacular, but acceptable. Zucchini Fries - These arrived without any dipping sauce, which seemed odd. We had to order tzatziki separately, but even that was below average quality. Fried Calamari - This was the biggest letdown of our meal. The calamari was cut into giant pieces and unfortunately had absorbed far too much cooking oil, which didn’t smell fresh. The calamari itself didn’t taste fresh either, and we ultimately had to send it back. We replaced it with another souvlaki instead. The Verdict From experience, I’ve learned that restaurants with amazing views rarely excel at food as well, and 5 Steps in the Sand unfortunately follows this pattern. The restaurant seems better suited for a quick afternoon drink while enjoying the spectacular scenery rather than a proper meal.
