1888 Meze Bar — Restaurant in Municipality of Thira

Warm, friendly, knowledgeable servers, happily chatting in fluent English, and the chefs have very high standards. Strongly recommended. I had the sausages, shrimp salad, complimentary specialty local dip, and a fine rosé. Better than the best Greek restaurants in Australia (high praise indeed). I showed up, without a booking, as a single diner, late on a quiet Thursday. I am used to being turned away in this situation (so that staff at less discerning restaurants can close early). Instead, the staff at 1888 Meze Bar were practically falling over themselves to make me feel welcome, to set me up at a table that showed off their amazing views, to recommend their favourite menu options (that they clearly eat themselves and understand how the ingredients are selected from local producers: impressive), and to persevere, very politely, to praise and help improve my woefully inadequate broken spoken Greek. They are the best cultural tourism ambassadors that Santorini could hope for. The shrimp salad was easily the best I have ever tasted in the world (and I am a huge fan of the Thai equivalent). We chose this place because we were staying nearby but it was a massive mistake. The food was ok but didn't have enough salt. Dessert was way too sweet. The girl serving us was friendly but she was nowhere to be found when we needed her. Then we got the bill... the mains were 15€ which is fair enough, but we paid 30€ for 2 glasses of house wine and 34€ for 2 desserts... yes, the desserts were more expensive than the mains and the already expensive glasses of wine. We had asked for a wine menu but we never got one. Terrible experience all around. Today we went to Ta Postalia tou Aigaiou and paid 39€ which includes 500ml of wine! And the food was waaaaaaaay better!

Edit to reply to their disgusting reply to my review. We were NOT provided with a wine menu despite having ASKED for one. The waitress LEFT the premises on several occasions leaving us alone, so we even had to go find the salt ourselves! Please don't you ever question my honesty and integrity. You may not like to hear about someone's experience but it doesn't make it fair to practically...

Well what can we say, firstly we would like to thank George. From the second we met him his warm and welcoming greeting was second to none. The staff at the restaurant are nothing more than attentive to every detail therefore make your dinning experience 5 star and are a credit to the restaurant. We chose to eat at the restaurant several nights during our stay and could not resist visiting again & again.
