Nótafa Vendéglő — Restaurant in Budapest

This is a very good local place with a lovely, laid - back atmosphere. They have English menus available and my waiter was adequately conversant such that ordering was not an issue. The dining room is somewhat modest in size but well kept and presents as a traditional Hungarian eatery. Based on my visit, their business appears to be robust. Located where they are in a more residential, workaday part of Budapest, it is not surprising that the crowd appeared to be mostly locals.

I was seated right away when I walked in. My server attended to me quickly and did a stellar job while I was there. The menu offered several tempting choices. I started with the traditional mushroom soup with a dab of cream mixed in. For my main, I had the turkey cutlets with a wild blueberry gravy. Everything was quite delicious. The portions for the soup and the main were both more than adequate. I finished with a double espresso that was not the highlight of the evening but, given the delicious fare and good service, I can overlook that.

With sparkling water to drink, my total including tip was 5000 Ft. That was roughly $20 USD at the time, which was a reasonable deal by my accounting. Food was pretty good but they ripped us off. They have this deceptive practice of listing a dish on the menu for one price and when you get the bill it is a higher price. What happened to us for example was the following:

We all ordered dinner / main courses. I got the Pork Medallions cooked with peppers, tomatoes and potatoes listed including all these things on the menu for 3000 Forints. When the bill came the dish was actually 3600 Forints. I inquired and they told me the potatoes, peppers and tomatoes were a "garnish" and as such incurred an extra charge. This was the same case with all 4 of our meals. VERY DECEPTIVE and a down right rip off where I come from. I will never go back out of principle. BTW this extra charge was not a cover charge as I asked if they had a cover charge before ordering and they said "no" but none-the-less they figured out another way...

The prices are reasonable. The food was nice especially the deer was awesome which my niece had. On the picture is sztrapacska, was delicious but I was missing the grated potato from the dumpling. The service was fast even it were 5 of us. Unfortunately at the end of the dinner when we wanted to pay separately they just gave us the menu to calculate ourself so I decided I'm going to pay the whole and later we share beetween us. When I told the waiter we changed our mind and I'm gonna pay the full amount he made a grimace. ...I made it easier to him and he still made a face to me. This incident made a mark on the whole...
