Picture this! We made a reservation at one of Hungary's esteemed Michelin-star restaurants in late August. The kind of place where the flavors are supposed to dance in your mouth while you sip on something fancy and contemplate the meaning of life—or at least the meaning of the next course. After an hour of traveling and a weekend hotel booked just to enjoy our 8-course culinary adventure, we strolled up to the establishment, excitement in the air."
But, lo and behold, the manager greeted us with a smile that slowly turned into a face full of shock when he announced — wait for it — that they had NO RECORD of our reservation. Yes, you heard right. Not even a whisper of our names on their fancy reservation system, even though we had a text to prove we had made one! Apparently, our hopes of refined dining had been whisked away like yesterday’s breadsticks.
They explained that 8-course meals require meticulous preparation that starts in the morning, and unfortunately, they didn’t have the ingredients to whip up another meal—classic Michelin star drama, right? But don’t worry, they offered us a couple of free glasses of Hungarian sparkling wine to help drown our sorrows. And while we were sipping on the bubbly, something else was bubbling under the surface—literally!
As we toasted to our dashed dining dreams, we noticed some uninvited guests. Yes, folks, rats were scurrying about like they were in some kind of underground rodent fashion show. And it was unmistakably rats and not muskrats that one can see around town. I mean, when you’re in a Michelin-star restaurant, the only thing that should be roaming the floor is your extravagant meal, not a rat parade!
So, naturally curious, I approached the manager and asked if he was aware of this little furry situation. His response? 'No, we are not!' I sensed a bit of hesitation on his part, but gave him the benefit of a doubt, just to find out later that night that the restaurant had a rats exterminator right after our conversation.
After weighing our options and deciding that dinner with rats might not be quite as gourmet as we’d hoped, we ventured to a nearby cafe owned by the same hotel. Spoiler alert: More rats! It was like a scene straight out of a cheesy ratatouille movie—only less entertaining and more... well, disheartening.
After this unforgettable dining experience, the hotel manager, in a generous twist, offered us a 20% discount on our meal at the cafe. However, I didn't intend to take advantage of this offer, because I didn't want to be beholden.
But here’s where it gets even crazier! When we get the bill, that supposed 20% discount? It had come straight from our anticipated tip! Instead of a discount, we had just been given a lesson on culinary subtraction! Our wonderful waiters who earned every cent of that tip ended up subsidizing our so-called discount.
So, in conclusion—if you ever find yourself in Platan, remember this, before you dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant, perhaps check for rats instead of reservations! And maybe just enjoy your sparkling wine by a nearby fountain. It’s cheaper, and at least the only critters you'll see are the ducks and swans!
