Mangalore in Bangalore is worth a visit for few reasons listed below:

  1. Fresh fish
  2. Home-made masala
  3. Variety
  4. Service

Hailing from Mangalore and fish eater, I love to explore good Manglorean type fish eateries in Bangalore. Having watched the video from foodlovers Kripal and knowing about the young guys who are engineers yet took the punt of following their passion drew me to this place. We visited on weekday so the crowd was less. They know to speak in Konkani and that was added advantage to connect with them. Some of the dishes tried and the unbiased review for them is as follows:

  1. Chilly chicken: Used the kabab pieces and tossed them in chinese masala, was good for palate. Kinda warmed us up.
  2. Prawns ghee roast : This needs a little bit of tweaking, the consistency, texture, color was perfect but I missed the whiff of ghee, a little extra ghee and a pinch of salt would have taken it to next level, prawns just melted in the mouth, no two thoughts about freshness.
  3. Kane fry : Spice level was less again maybe trying to cater the generic crowd. My brothers fav fish, he came all the way just for it, taste could improve but the freshness was unbeatable.
  4. Bangude fry : It was tawa fry, which takes longer to fry and with high demand it could not spend much time on tawa, felt it could have fried it for 2 min extra to get that crisp outer layer. Nevertheless, next time will ask them to do so also with extra spice for sure.
  5. Koli uppu khara : semi gravy chicken curry with neer dose, found the chicken gravy similar to Andhra chilli chicken, as per the name a tinge of saltiness is experienced but goes well with neer dosa.
  6. Ghee rice and chicken kurma : Ghee rice was awesome , flavourful and had good texture of rice. Chicken kurma was also mildly spiced and went well with it. There was no fish curry rice that day, missed it badly but would definitely visit again to taste it. I liked the variety of fishes you have, one must have to be from coastal side to explore the dishes with open mind. Oyster, clams, squid all under one roof was like a fair for me.. explore with big gang so that you can taste variety. The boys have hunger to grow and passion to pursue , let’s give them a chance. Service needs to remain same ..excellent!

Suggestions: My vegetarian sis in law felt left out, paneer ghee roast or mushroom ghee roast if added to the list would have made her too a happy soul. Shared the same with owners and they happily took it up.

Why I want to go again? Oh yes, can’t disappoint the other fishes in the list, they need a chance too! Also, I need to give them 5/5 next time for...

MANGALORE IN BANGALORE

I set out to taste the most recent and popular food truck in south bangalore, MANGALORE IN BANGALORE. This food truck serves delicious authentic Mangalore style seafood in Bangalore as the name says. The three owners of the restaurant, Koushik, Sanketh and Sachin are childhood friends who came to Bangalore to study and the food truck was their passion.

The whole surroundings of the food truck is filled with the aroma of coconut oil and the sizzling sound of the fish frying on the tawa.

First I got my hands on the most interesting dish Bangada Green Chilly, the fish was covered in a bright green masala which turned a beautiful golden brown after frying. The fish was roasted perfectly as it observed the flavours of hot green chillies and fresh coriander till the last bit, making each bite juicy and flavourful. 4/5

The Angel/Kingfish XL fry made me go wild as I was lost in the amazing taste of the dish. The taste and warmth of the red chillies and some pungent flavor of the garlic with coconut oil just brought the dish to life. It went well with the green chutney but trust me, adding some lime to it just makes the dish top notch 5/5

Prawns Ghee Roast was a pretty good dish. The small prawns were cooked perfectly without making it rubbery and were garnished with cashews. The flavourful blast of spice, followed by ghee just makes the dish amazing.4/5

Neer Dosa with fish curry and chicken curry. The Neer Dosa was amazing as it was the perfect medium to suck up all the flavours of the curries. The fish curry was quite mild, whereas the chicken curry was filled with flavours and both of them complimented the Neer Dosa very well.3/5

Ranimeen/ Pink Perch, the fish in this dish was fluffier than the other fishes I tried, but the dish was a festival of flavours, making it very different from others.4/5 And let me remind you, they used Biodegradable plates to serve and most of the dishes were served with green chutney, onions, lemon and cucumber. The green chutney was something I would crave for, the secret flavours in it was beyond the world. (I asked for some extra chutney.. more...

I was skeptical about the quality of food from seafood food truck but I was taken by surprise. The taste absolutely is authentic, I feel that the spices are mellowed down a bit to adjust to a generic pallet. But that doesn't take away from the taste. I must highlight that every item has a fresh catch, the quality of the fish is what you usually get in the coastal regions. We ordered the following dishes (let me leave a note on each),

Chicken sukka- loved the flavours, very typical to what you would find in a mangalorean home kitchen

Clam sukka - it has the perfect quantity of masalas and taste of the clams wonderfully flown into the gravy

Fish kebab - Cooked precisely with slight crunch on top and soft inside. The bite size could have been a bit large thought. These are more like fish popcorns

Neer dosa with chicken curry- they serve two neer dosas with a green chicken curry. The curry is very tasty and flavorful with a great consistency

Kane fry- I loved the texture and the taste.

Prawns fry- Good, just slightly bland

Prawn ghee roast- I have neutral ratings for this one. In a more authentic preparation I would see a bit more spice and acidity which helps balance the sharp taste of the ghee. I think that was missing here

Oyster sukka- they were cooked perfectly but lacked salt and flavours. This was the only disappointing dish

Having said that.. this is must visit eatery in Bangalore. It's a bit crowded over the weekend. We went around 7pm and the wait time was about 20mins. We ordered all at once and ate in our car. As it's a food truck, please don't expect seating. Carry your water and napkins.

Please make sure to dispose the plates in the dustbin provided by the food truck and try not to leave it on the...

If you’re contemplating a pilgrimage to Mangalore in Bangalore, do yourself a favour and don’t. While Mangalorean food enjoys a certain popularity in this city, here it sadly falls short of the mark, both in quality and authenticity. It all began somewhat promisingly with the garlic prawns, which, while not extraordinary, were at least edible. But from there, things took a rather grim turn. The prawn ghee roast was nothing short of dreadful. Cloyingly greasy, the masala more akin to coarse sand than a delicate spice blend, and utterly devoid of any discernible flavour. To add insult to injury, it was burnt. The sole fish tawa fry that followed was similarly underwhelming: bland masala and, yet again, scorched beyond reason. The pepper squid was rubbery and uninspired, and the lemon prawns? A dry, tasteless affair that hardly did justice to their promise. Now, this is no food truck, mind you. Though it would almost be a disservice to call it that. At best, it’s a mini-truck with limited offerings: tawa fry seems to be the only dish prepared on it. While everything else is churned out behind what can only be described as stage curtains, as though they’re attempting to hide their culinary failings. And the location? Well, that’s a treat in itself. Situated in the middle of nowhere, it’s not so much a place to dine as it is an arduous quest for a meal you’re better off not having in the first place.
