Books, songs and food recommendations have been driven by strong Instagram influences and one such dish that took Instagram by storm this year is Bhutanese Cheese Stew, Ema Datshi. Made with spicy chilies and cheese, this Bhutanese dish gained popularity because it was touted as best by Deepika Padukone. Soon, Instagram joined the bandwagon and started showing home cooks, restaurants and connoisseurs relishing the stew. Joining the bandwagon is an eatery in Ahmedabad - El Olivo.
I had been to El Olivo earlier but Ema Datshi wasn't introduced then. Making the most of a birthday celebration opportunity, we were headed to El Olivo specifically to enjoy Ema Datshi.
The nip in the air helped us enjoy the stew better. The balance of Cheese and Chilies was good. The stew is served with sourdough bread and focaccia breads. Ema Datshi is a perfect thing to mop up any bread. And as mentioned by Ms. Padukone, this warm stew will be a best accompaniment to a bowl of hot steaming rice too.
Wanted to have the classic Margherita Pizza and ordered the same in Neapolitan base. We were asked for our preference for the crust and we chose Neapolitan instead of Romana. Romana is a thin crust base where as Neapolitan is doughy & fluffy at the edges. Since a lot of people discard the sides, Romana being the thin crust is devoured easily by all, as mentioned by the staff. A special mention to their Pizza sauce. The balance of flavours and the consistency of it completely satiated our cravings.
For a non-experimental person in the group, we wanted a simple Indian sandwich, preferably Mumbaiya sandwich. Though I was aware that the menu does not have it, I requested if there was something of that sort. A lot of restaurants do entertain such requests but not all. There is nothing wrong if a restaurant does not go out of their way to accommodate special requests but if they do, client retention becomes that much easier. Nevertheless, we were suggested to have Kadhai Paneer Focaccia Sandwich. Out of all the three dishes that we ordered, this sandwich was the least liked. The Paneer Kadhai gravy has started tasting same across outlets and restaurants, thanks to Makhani Mayo, and ready to make gravies. It is so generic that I have started disliking them altogether. This wasn’t for me.
Sunday rush was maddening and it took some time and management to get things rolling with the order. Apart from the initial glitch, everything went smoothly. If you have a Pizza craving, El Olivo will not fail in satiating...
