Read moreI’ll start by saying this: I don’t even like South Indian food. But after visiting Kovallam in Ahmedabad, that completely changed. The first thing we tried was the Podi Idli, and it blew my mind. It was the best idli I’ve ever eaten. Super soft, loaded with flavor, and coated in buttery podi masala that had some delicious crunchy bits. The taste was bold, savory, spicy, and salty in all the right ways. Every bite was just packed with flavor.
The restaurant is a comfortable size and not overly crowded, which I think helps them maintain such high food quality. Everything felt freshly made and thoughtfully prepared. I also had the onion rava dosa, and it was just as impressive: crispy, perfectly salty, and balanced beautifully by the sweetness of the onion. I didn’t even touch the chutney or sambar because the dosa was flavorful enough on its own.
Raj Kumar helped us during our visit, and he made the whole experience even better. He was warm, helpful, and gave excellent recommendations. He really took the time to guide us through the menu and made sure I got to try dishes I would genuinely enjoy. At the end, he surprised us with a complimentary coconut sheero, which was warm, rich with ghee, and absolutely delicious.
