The New Chanakya was a chance discovery. I was walking down Solan's unappealing Mall Road, looking for a place to have lunch, and came across this fine building with eateries on two floors. The New Chanakya is on the first floor, so it's not much of a climb, and it also helps in avoiding street-level noises. The size of the restaurant will surprise you. Clearly the restaurant has local clientele as well and isn't entirely dependent on tourists. The seating on sofas set besides wooden tables, has both a comfy feel, as well as gives the restaurant a formal, luxe air. I chose a seat near the huge windows overlooking Solan, the highway to Shimla and the mountains beyond. I ordered mixed vegetables and roti for lunch, gulab jamun and dahi bhalla as starters and gajar halwa for dessert. The gulab jamun was yumm. The dahi bhalla was run-of-the-mill. The mixed vegetables was oily and overspicy. The gajar halwa was absolutely mouth-watering. The service was polite, efficient and...
Read moreI have been visiting this place since my school days and sorry to say it has deteriorated all the way long!
I am surprised to see how people have rated 4 or even 5 stars, where the reality is, it's the town's worst restaurant in terms of service and behavior. The waiters are extremely rude, the service is pathetic and don’t be surprised if the waiter gives you a taunting remark for asking to re-heat the cold items or if they are pin pointed for something served wrong! Let me interject to announce another stupidity they always make sure has to be served on the experience platter – The moment your food is in your mouth, or somewhere in the terminal of your elementary canal (Pun Intended), the waiter is sitting on your face with a bill, shouting out loud, “ You’re not allowed to sit now!”
Even the quality of the food is not great. The only thing good is the decor!
Google doesn’t give you an option to prize places with a negation, else it would have been a...
Read moreVisited a few days ago with family on my way to Shimla. This became an instant favorite of mine over other restraunts I had visited in the past on the same route. The ambience was good with a spacious sitting area and unlike other restraunts with crammed up seating. We ordered a round of mocktails that were all very refreshing ! The highlight of this restraunt however was the food..... Butter chicken here was juicy and succulent ....one of the only few restraunts outside Delhi that was able to remind me of the original version found only in Delhi. Tandoori chicken deserves a special mention too. This place had a pretty big bakery too... although I din't get a chance to try out any of their cakes... they all looked enticing. Would definitely visit this...
