An Icon of Hyderabad’s Sweet Scene – Legendary Taste, But Service Needs a Wake-Up Call
This place proudly holds its reputation as one of the oldest and most beloved sweet shops in Hyderabad, and for good reason. With decades of experience behind them, they have mastered the art of high-quality, hygienically prepared traditional Indian sweets that continue to delight generations of loyal customers.
Among their standout offerings, the Ajmeri Kalakand is absolutely exceptional – rich, perfectly textured, and just the right amount of sweetness. The Malai Sandwich is another gem, light yet indulgent, while their Kachori brings a delightful savory crunch to balance all the mithai indulgence. Other notable mentions include their Motichur Laddoos, Khova Puri, Petha, and a wide array of dry fruit-based sweets that are both festive and flavorful.
The variety is extensive and the flavors are authentic, staying true to traditional recipes while maintaining consistent quality over the years. It's not just a sweet shop, it's an experience — especially for those who appreciate timeless Indian confections.
That said, their customer service is a major letdown. For a place of such repute, the staff’s attitude is surprisingly dismissive and unhelpful. Ask a question about the sweets, try to explore their variety, or even just request a recommendation — and you're often met with indifference, reluctance, or, worse, arrogance. It's almost as if their popularity has led to complacency. What could be an engaging and delightful customer interaction instead feels like you're an inconvenience rather than a...
Read moreWhere do I begin? This is my most favorite sweet shop in the whole world. My dear, late grandfather, D. Narender Rao, had always taken me to Balaji since I was a child to buy me sweets, and especially during my visits to India (since I reside in the US). My kind Thatha would, without fail, ensure my parents, siblings and I got to have a taste during every visit. Although all their sweets and snacks are superb quality, my absolute favorite ones are ajmeri kalakhand, white kalakhand, gulab jamun, rasmalai, ghatia numkeen. I’ve never tasted such Indian sweets anywhere else. Recently, a friend of mine visited hyderabad and brought me back Balaji kalakhand to New York where I now reside (see pics) and it has felt SO NICE to taste it after several years. It brought tears to my eyes as it also made me remember my Thatha, whom I still miss constantly. While visiting India will never be the same for me again without Narender Thatha, I look forward very much to visiting Balaji next time when I come. My family lived in Kachiguda/Chappal Bazaar area for four or five generations now, and Balaji has ALWAYS been a staple. I only wish they opened a shop or shipped to the US, it would be very meaningful for my mom (Narender’s daughter) and my younger siblings. MUST VISIT SWEET SHOP for anyone visiting or residing...

Ok then I will see where it came from ' . I told him that you are not even p correctly answering to my questions and you are not asking me to replace the sweets .he told that 'ok keep your sweets and go.' I was very disappointed by his behaviour and I returned his both sweets and he said ' ok keep it there and go .' all the workers were looking at me and he was not even asking me to take the money back. I suggest that anybody or any family should not buy from this shop .The worst experience.the owner was very very rude . And such behaviour from the...
