Learn moreMadrasi Hotel is an absolute gem when it comes to authentic South Indian cuisine, and I’m honestly surprised it hasn’t become a viral food destination yet. From the moment you enter, there’s a warm, welcoming atmosphere that instantly sets the tone for a great dining experience. The place is clean, simple, and rooted in tradition — no flashy interiors, just the comforting feeling of home-cooked food served with heart.
I visited with my family on a Sunday afternoon, and though the place was bustling, we didn’t have to wait long. The staff was very efficient in managing the crowd, and we were seated quickly. The menu is well-curated, featuring all the staples you’d expect — dosas, idlis, vadas, uttapams, pongal, South Indian meals — and each dish is executed with care and consistency. You can tell that this isn’t just a restaurant trying to serve South Indian food — it is South Indian food, from the heart of the kitchen to the final bite.
We started off with the classic masala dosa, and it was hands down one of the best I’ve ever had. It was golden, crisp on the outside, but soft and slightly chewy inside — just the right balance. The potato filling was flavorful and comforting, with a hint of ginger and curry leaves, not too spicy, but not bland either. The sambhar was rich, with a beautiful balance of tanginess and spice, loaded with vegetables like drumsticks, carrots, and pumpkin. And don’t even get me started on the chutneys — the coconut chutney was thick, fresh, and mildly sweet, while the tomato chutney had a kick that lingered pleasantly on the tongue.
Next, we tried the medu vadas and idlis. The vadas were piping hot, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside — just how they should be. The idlis were soft and airy, practically melting in the mouth. Both came with generous refills of sambhar and chutney, without us even having to ask. The servers were proactive, attentive, and genuinely hospitable, something that’s getting rare in budget-friendly places these days.
We also ordered their Mini Meals, which turned out to be a full-fledged feast. It had a variety of items — rice, sambhar, rasam, poriyal, kootu, papad, pickle, and a small dessert. Everything was served on a banana leaf, and the flavors were spot on. The rasam, in particular, was spicy and soul-warming. The sabzis were not overly oily, and the taste reminded me of something my Tamil friend’s mom once packed for lunch — full of home-style love and care.
Towards the end of the meal, we couldn’t resist trying their filter coffee, and it was divine. Strong, frothy, and aromatic, served in a steel tumbler and davara — a perfect South Indian touch to round off the meal. It wasn't too milky or overly sugary, just the right balance that left a comforting aftertaste.
The pricing is another reason Madrasi Hotel deserves praise. For the quality, hygiene, portion size, and taste, the meals are extremely affordable. You leave not only full but satisfied on every level. It’s also very evident that cleanliness is a priority here — from the kitchen area (which you can partially see) to the dining space and washbasin areas, everything is well maintained.
What makes Madrasi Hotel truly 5-star in my opinion is the consistency. This wasn’t my first visit — I’ve been here a few times now, and the quality never drops. Whether it’s an early morning breakfast or a weekend lunch, they maintain the same standard. The food never feels rushed or half-cooked, and that’s something a lot of other busy restaurants struggle with.
In a world where so many eateries are focused on presentation and gimmicks, Madrasi Hotel stays true to its roots — delivering honest, flavorful food made with pride. It’s the kind of place you keep coming back to, not just for a good meal, but because it feels familiar and reliable.

Read moreNothing great about this hotel, bollywood Director imtiaz ali has never been to Chennai or south India i can tell you after eating from this place. Reading all these reviews I visited this place since I haven't had any South Indian food in a long time.
They have served me rotten thengaai (coconut) chutney, and I reported about this to my table's waiter he just gave some excuse and left. 👎
And the sambar they served was RAW which made it taste very spicy the uncooked masala gives you that feeling. 👎
👎The dosai batter was old , the dosa tasted so sour. Then I ordered two idlis hoping this would be fresh and this was the same though idli was soft but the batter was so sour and couldn't have more than that. With idli they again served chutney which was not rotten.
The medu vadai 🫳(Vada or wada) was crispy and fresh that's it nothing inside just okay yeah if you have tasted medu vadai in Chennai then you'll know why I am saying this. This is the only thing that was consumable.
Then the filter coffee !👎
When you go to a hotel in Chennai and order food and filter coffee they won't serve your coffee before the meal, they serve you only after the meal, Common sense! 👎
Yes the coffee wasn't great it was just okayish consumable. Not everyone can make a filter coffee it's a big process and the quality of milk the method of brewing the coffee is not as easy as you see in an advert.
Yes so you want to taste something South Indian go to the south and eat . No this is not the hotel. Over exaggerated south indian hotel nothing is really nice to write...
Read moreToday visited with family at about 1:15 pm and ordered idli, vada and butter masala dosa and onion masala dosa Found size of vada and idli almost half/ 60% of the sizes used to be offered till Aug 2024 ( last visited in Aug 2024 probably on 28th Aug ) Size of dosa also found 25% shorter than earlier size We are visiting this hotel since last 40 yrs We feel proud to go there for idli, vada, alu bonda, uttapam, dosa, yellow halwa The whole family like all above items
But today were surprised with the size reduction and also taste/ quality of chatni sambhar found deteriorated Do not know as to why the current mgmt of Madrasi hotel has taken such decisions Did not check the price of individual items to understand why size and quality on lower side I retired in 2023 and since then spend 4/5 months in a year in Bengalore/ Hyderabad with beta bahu and beti damad and naati In Bangalore/ Hyderabad we find dosa, idli, vada at many places with good taste but very proudly we claim ...... "कठिन समय मजबूत लोगों को जन्म देता है। मजबूत लोग अच्छे समय का निर्माण करते हैं। अच्छा समय कमजोर लोगों को जन्म देता है। कमजोर लोग कठिन समय का निर्माण करते हैं,"
May God save the great legacy of The Madrasi Hotel...
