The hidden gem of Kannur. This visually unspectacular eatery at Prabhath Junction, Kannur delivers big time on its food though. They have breakfast and lunch service on all days a week except Sunday.
They serve traditional Kerala breakfast including wheat puttu. Fish curries and tawa fried fish is available for breakfast itself.
What really sets this place apart is the lunch and it's seafood accompaniments. The freshness of the seafood is a guarantee and it's cooked to perfection. Though there is a good coating of masala on the fish fry, the fish is so well cooked that it remains moist and soft inside and you are able to taste the fish along with the spices. They serve all kinds of fish and shell fish according to availability. The muru (oyster) fry there is very good and I haven't been able to find it anywhere else in Kannur.
The lunch spread is also very good with the sambar and fish curry being top notch. I have never tried their biryani, but then again why would you want to, amidst the wealth of all that wonderful seafood.
The place is very pocket friendly also with an average spend per head of around 200-225 for a lunch and a serving of fried fish, which gets you premium fish dishes for which you would probably have to dish out around Rs. 500/- in fancy restaurants.
All in all a spot which if experienced once will keep on pulling you back.
NB: Expect a good crowd and waiting for you tables in the aisles during the lunch hour. Also people don't come here for...
Read moreKannur has no shortage of seafood joints, but my recent stop at Ananda Bhavan felt like discovering a hidden gem. What impressed me most was the balance between quality, taste, and overall dining experience.
The seafood here speaks for itself – fresh, generously portioned, and cooked with just the right amount of masala. The king fish fry was crisp outside yet soft inside, the mussels and oysters had that perfect coastal punch, and the prawns were addictive enough to make me order a second round. Even the fish eggs were fried beautifully, something you don’t often get this right elsewhere.
But it’s not just about seafood. The vegetarian accompaniments were equally delightful – rich sambhar, tangy pachadi, and side dishes that felt like they came straight from a homely kitchen. Add in chilled buttermilk and a payasam that could easily pass as the star of the meal, and you’ve got a spread that satisfies on every level.
Service was quick, courteous, and genuinely warm, and I noticed the place was neat and well-kept right down to the washrooms – a detail that matters.
In short, Ananda Bhavan isn’t just another fish place; it’s a restaurant where every item on the plate feels thoughtfully prepared. A must-try spot in Kannur for anyone who wants a fulfilling,...
