Read moreA WARNING to Anyone Planning to Visit Barka Restaurant, Kannur:
This was one of the worst dining experiences I’ve ever had — not just because of the poor food and service, but because of the way we were blatantly disrespected and discriminated against.
I visited Barka Restaurant with my family. We were assured by the waiter that everything we ordered was available. But while other tables — who came after us — were served quickly, we were ignored. Appam, which we were especially looking forward to, was served to others, and then we were told it was "over." This was not a case of miscommunication — this was clear preferential treatment.
The food, when it finally arrived, was pathetic — tasteless, cold, and not worth even half the ₹2200 we were charged. To make things worse, we felt we were overcharged simply because we were speaking in Kannada. The staff’s behavior changed the moment they heard our language — we were treated like outsiders and spoken to with clear arrogance and passive hostility.
Even something as basic as sliced cucumber was made a big deal — the server emphasized that it’s chargeable, as if we were begging for a freebie. The attitude was shocking.
Then came the final insult: we requested lime soda to be packed. First, they refused. Only after we insisted, they gave it in a dirty plastic container that had visible dust and fungus. This is not just rude — it’s a serious health hazard. The staff showed zero professionalism, no hygiene standards, and no respect for customers.
To top it off, the manager's arrogant and careless attitude was beyond unacceptable. He behaved as if we were beneath him — no apology, no accountability.
This place is a disgrace to the hospitality industry. If you value your health, money, and self-respect, I strongly advise you to stay away from Barka Restaurant, Kannur. They don’t deserve your time or...
Read moreI hate giving poor reviews, but constructive feedback benefits both businesses and customers.
So here’s my honest take.
Barka is too overhyped for its own good.
(After going through the reviews again to check what the hype is all about, I am starting to feel they are fake. I could be wrong, but many reviewers who left 5-star ratings have just left review for this particular business. On the other hand, there is a flood of negative reviews recently, that reflect my exact thoughts about the place. The positive reviews are likely bots.)
We ordered sweet corn chicken soup, bhindi masala, coconut chicken fry, and chapati for dinner.
The soup and chapati were good. But the rest of the meal threw me into despair.
The bhindi masala, for example, was strangely sweet. It tasted more like payasam than a savory dish. The coconut chicken fry was equally disappointing with nothing interesting going on, except a few slices of coconut. It was unnecessarily sweet too.
It’s frustrating when dishes don’t meet basic expectations. A long menu is pointless if the quality isn’t consistent.
Focus on a few dishes, simplify choices for customers, and perfect what you serve. I am happy to pay for food that tastes good.
Please remember, If my goal is just to satisfy hunger, I could have Kanji and achar at home.
You are begging for bad reviews when you serve sub-par food and...
