It's rare indeed to stumble upon a dining experience that surprises and delights a well-traveled palette so much that it begs to be penned down in a long review. Mugcafe turned out to be such a hidden find, tucked away deep within a side street, while ambling towards Calicut Beach on a sultry March evening.
What pulled us in was the four stories of chic interiors with walls upon walls of books. What made us stay was the curated ambience - complete with relaxing music, and fine crockery and cutlery. The pricing felt justified for the fine dining experience on offer.
We tried the Penne Arrabiata and Fish n Fries. The Penne Arrabiata impressed with its layered depth of flavors in the sauce, easily one of the best I have had globally, while the Fish n Fries surprised with its expertly executed contrast of mouthfeel - crispy exteriors with meltingly soft interiors. The drinks were so interesting that we ended up trying four of them - Honeysuckle Peach Iced Tea, Orange Mango Crush, Strawberry Apple Punch and the Signature Mog Latte. The defining features across the food and drink were the surprising play and balance of flavors and the focus on aesthetics.
Easily one of the best Continental fine dining experiences in the city, Mugcafe is a must try in...

Surprisingly enough they didn't have a cappuccino, considering it is the most preferred type. So we went for a flat white and a cup of Turkish coffee. Price was a bit towards the higher side, but considering the quality, it was definitely worth it. It also came with a piece of brownie with each cup.
We ordered a rib eye steak, the portion was sizable and tasted good. We had ordered medium rare but we got it rarely done. Not complaining, but not everyone prefers it that way. Also, they jus sauce could have been a little better.
The cafe is multistoreyed so lots of space, and lots of parking area too. Ambience is pleasant. Also, very less crowd, probably coz of the inaccessibility of the road due to the construction work going on.
There are lots of cafes in Calicut and not all of them provides a quality experience, especially if you’re looking for good coffee, but this one does. Definitely recommending this place.
Since we ordered only limited food I cannot give a complete food review. 5⭐ for the...
Read moreHave to say their service was excellent. The drink options were all good. Tried 4 of their steak. The chicken in both steaks were well cooked but lacked any flavours. The Jus Sause that were served with all 4 steaks were all same and below average lacking any flavour. The 2 red meat steaks I had, Lamb Chops and Rib Eye steak were very poorly cooked and was very dry. It is probably the worst steak I've ever had. The sautéed veggies and the buns and even the soup were good. The menu is towards the expensive side. I get that it's a premium cafe but the taste of the food doesn't justify the pricing for me. My final verdict would be that I won't recommend this cafe.
Edit: We did tell the staff of the cafe that the steak wasn't cooked properly & even the sauces don't have any flavors to itand their reply was "other...
