Udupi Veg Restaurant — Restaurant in Kerala

I recently visited this restaurant and had a highly disappointing experience. To start with, they do not accept credit or debit cards—a fact that isn’t mentioned anywhere. When I was already feeling unwell (chest pain), the owner, a bald man at the cashier, rudely insisted I walk 1 km to withdraw cash.

I ordered a Ghee Masala Dosa but was served a burnt Paper Roast without ghee. After pointing it out, they reluctantly replaced the order but still charged me for it. I offered to pay without hesitation, but the rude demeanor of the cashier ruined the experience further.

At one point, the cashier even suggested I go to Mysore Cafe for better service—which I absolutely will next time. To settle the bill, I took an auto, paid extra, and showed good customer courtesy. However, the cashier pounced on the money, shared a wrong copy of the bill, and even tried to snatch the correct one from my hand.

His behavior was shocking—more like a miserly character from The Lord of the Rings (Gollum, to be precise). While the server who attended to me was polite and deserving of a tip, I doubt this cashier passed it on.

The restaurant’s approach to saving costs—burning dosas, removing ghee, cutting masala—reflects poorly on its commitment to quality. If this continues, I wouldn’t be surprised if they start rationing water in the restrooms next.

Verdict: Avoid this place. There are far better restaurants like Mysore Cafe that value their customers and maintain proper standards.

Ps They only offer 4-5 items for breakfast at 8am. That shows how well they are organised for the day. Shame for...

One of the worst restaurant food and staff in sultan Bathre. Don't waste your time instead have burger in KFC.... This may be spoiler for your trip..

Would like to share my experience on a day where most of the veg restaurant were closed and we end with this hopeless kind of restaurant... We went with lots of hope as we were hungry and we found this restaurant.. we reached grab a table after that checked with lady staff available at the counter where is the menu shar replied "it's not changed" as i have to remember the menus even I never visited to this restaurant.. after that shar said another staff will come and take order.. we waited for 20-26 min no one turned to take order finally we approached 3 waiters all said will come but no one turned.. we again checked in counter whether someone will take order or not (this time male staff available in counter) he again asked one of waiter to take order... Waiter came to us like he is doing some kind of favour he said Dosa ghee rost you will get immediately and other things it will take 30 min we said we are ok to wait .... At the same time another bunch of people came and same menu served in 5 min we again went and asked staff available at the counter than we got ghee rost immediately half filled hundi of paneer gravy, 2 chapati for each, so called veg fried rice without a single piece of vegetables.... After just gulping the food was trying to convey my experience to staff she replied "thank you"

Surprisingly disappointed.

I've visited this restaurant before and had their dosas and masala dosas and it was really good one month ago. I've visited many other udupi branches in south India and mostly it's really good. That's y I recommend this restaurant to my father and he went to feel very much disappointed and I was like may be it's that one time . But then today I visited oneweek after this incident and the look of the chutney and sambar itself was clearly different than those of two month before and the dosa was very much below average. Felt really sad about it . Most possible explanation is the chef have changed and the flavours have become pathetic. Today I've stricken out sulthan bathery Udupi hotel from my list of favorites and it have literally stopped delivering the quality that have been promised by the food chain brand .

So , if at all you guys are planning to continue in business, just bring back who ever were there before in ur kitchen. And serve the authentic...
