New Kundan Dhaba was our first dinner spot in the city of Amritsar. It was past 10 and we were limited by options, so we went ahead with the hotel person's input.
The food was your usual fare, nothing stood out particularly. We tried a paneer (cottage cheese) curry, dal makhni - a creamy black lentil dish, that takes long to cook, and sarso ka saag - mustard greens slurry, seasonally available in the winters.
We ordered an assortment of Indian flatbreads to go with the curries - some tandoor rotis, some lachcha parathas, and makki di roti or cornmeal flatbreads (for the mustard greens curry).
The papad was much thicker, like khichiya papad, but tasted as though made from lentils. They provided a big plate of what seemed like fresh house pickles, Indian style.
And we finished it off with gulab jamuns and lassi. More photos and details on the website -...
Read moreNew Kundan Dhaba is near the railway station and most of the tourists passengers who come by train to visit Amritsar City, come here to have meals . New Kundan Dhaba is vegetarian dhaba and instead of refined oil, dhesi ghee is used for preparation of vegetables and dals. The rates are reasonable and are within the range of a common man and the tourists enjoy the vegetarian food. But the service and the hygiene are not up to mark, considering that the Dhaba is there for more than forty years. As regards to menu, the choice is limited , but what over vegetarian dishes are served are delicious and tasty. Butter Nan and partha are also very Delicious. Even though on an average it serves more than one thousand people daily, but even then the basic facilities are name sake such as...
Read moreA birthday event which was totally ruined by the food that we fetched from the outlet. Yellow daal fry turned out to be all slimy paste. Aloo jeera wasn't good either as the potato slices were still uncooked and raw. The 6 tawa rotis were good, but we could hardly chew on the other 3 butter naans and 3 tandoori rotis that too were part of the order. Also the Palak Paneer, though it did taste ok but it still had the smell of the old stock used. The Peas pulaao tasted average. Apart from the pulaao, the entire left out food was shown to the bin. With New Kundan Dhaba, the experience that I had, I would recommend to dine-in at the outlet so that if the food ain't of quality can be brought to the notice of the management on the spot. Personally, I'm shutting my doors on New...
