A Taste Amidst the Chaos
Nestled in the heart of Pondicherry, Auroville Bakery beckons with promises of delectable treats and cozy ambiance. However, my recent visit revealed a bustling scene that might overwhelm the unprepared.
Upon arrival, the allure of freshly baked goods was undeniable, drawing throngs of eager patrons. Unfortunately, the popularity of the bakery translated into long queues, stretching beyond the threshold and testing the patience of even the most ardent food enthusiasts. With a wait time exceeding 30 minutes, impatience crept in as hunger gnawed at our resolve.
The scarcity of seating compounded the predicament, leaving us with no choice but to hover amidst the clamor, clutching our numbered tokens like prized possessions. The ambiance, though vibrant, felt stifled by the cacophony of conversations and the incessant shuffle of patrons vying for space.
Yet, amid the chaos, a silver lining emerged in the form of the food itself. Despite the limited menu options due to high demand, the offerings did not disappoint. Each bite was a testament to the bakery's commitment to quality, with flavors that transcended the chaos of the surroundings.
While the experience may deter the faint of heart, it is undeniable that Auroville Bakery's culinary prowess warrants a visit, provided one can brave the crowds. For those seeking a taste of Pondicherry's renowned bakery scene, a trip to Auroville Bakery is a rite of passage, albeit one best undertaken during quieter moments when the charm of the establishment can be fully...

It was an excellent experience, even if you swept the floor, it didn't matter. The work was very physical and hard, quite taxing. We were a good team; no-one was the boss", remembers Otto. There were no helpers to do the cleaning; 3-4 Aurovilians worked in 2-3 shifts per week; and no-one was paid. Some local grains like ragi and varagu were tried out: the output was ½ loaf of bread per...
