Review: Swamy’s South Indian Restaurant, Hiranandani, Thane
Swamy’s in Hiranandani, Thane, offers a reasonably good take on South Indian cuisine, but it falls short in a few areas that prevent it from standing out. As a regular visitor to South Indian restaurants, I had high hopes for Swamy’s, especially given its prime location in the heart of Hiranandani.
The staff are courteous and attentive, providing a warm greeting and prompt service, which is a plus.
The menu at Swamy’s features a wide array of South Indian staples, including various types of dosas, idlis, vadas, and uttapams, along with some North Indian options and snacks. On my visit, I opted for the classic masala dosa, expecting a flavorful meal given the restaurant's emphasis on South Indian cuisine.
The dosa itself was well-prepared. It had the right amount of crispiness and was generously filled with a nicely spiced potato masala. However, the accompaniments—sambar and chutneys—were underwhelming. The portions were disappointingly small. Sambar is essential to complement the dosa, and in this case, it was quite limited, almost as if it was an afterthought. The coconut chutney and tomato chutney, though tasty, were also served in very modest quantities.
This skimpiness on sambar and chutney portions significantly affects the dining experience. South Indian dishes like dosa rely heavily on these accompaniments to balance flavors and provide variety with each bite. When they are in short supply, it detracts from the enjoyment and leaves one wanting more to fully appreciate the dish.
The taste of the food itself is just above average. The flavors are authentic enough to satisfy a craving for South Indian cuisine but lack the depth and richness that could elevate Swamy’s from a good to a great restaurant. There is potential here, but it seems untapped. The restaurant would greatly benefit from a bit more generosity with their servings of sambar and chutneys and perhaps a little more attention to refining the taste profiles of their dishes.
In terms of value for money, Swamy’s is reasonably priced, but given the small portion sizes of the sambar and chutneys, it feels a bit lacking. When dining out, especially at a restaurant specializing in a particular regional cuisine, the expectation is to enjoy the dishes as they are traditionally meant to be enjoyed—without skimping on the essentials.
In conclusion, Swamy’s South Indian Restaurant in Hiranandani, Thane, offers a satisfactory experience with room for improvement. The food quality is acceptable, and the service is commendable. However, for Swamy’s to become a standout destination for South Indian cuisine, they need to address the issue of portion sizes for sambar and chutneys and enhance the overall flavor of their offerings. With these improvements, Swamy’s could transform from just another South Indian restaurant into a must-visit culinary spot in...
Read moreIn all of my foodie experience seldom have I been deceived by mere looks..yes, looks. Swamy.. by it's colour imagery, design & layout & most of all by the looks of the people working there seemed like a perfect franchise store of Southern Origin & there was this awesome flavour of the "Filter coffee" to confirm my belief. Generally you need two litmus tests to prove the authenticity of a genuine Southy Eatery, one is their " Sambar & Rasam" & second is the essence of their " Filter Coffee". On both these counts one can't just shake off Swamy from your memory. In most of Mumbai Udupi restaurants & the innumerable QSR's across the geography, the Sambar is invariably " Sweetened " to favour the North Indian & Gujju patrons however the absolute authentic Sambar is sour due to the amount of tamarind that goes into it. To cut a long story short, Swamy makes truly awesome Dosa's, Rasam Wada, Bisi bele, Dahi Wada, Uttappam & no wonder that the word of mouth has spread & has caught on like a wildfire which can be seen by the number of people hovering there at any given point of time during the day. More so in the weekends. I was very pleasantly surprised when I came to know that it was not a "Franchise store from Bengaluru" but very much an enterprise of a Local entrepreneur & their first foray into Southy cuisine. Full five stars for the thought...
Read moreI recently dined at this restaurant and overall, it was a pleasant experience. The food was delightful, and the service was commendable. However, a notable drawback was the absence of proper seating arrangements. The lack of seating meant that patrons had to eat while standing, which was a bit inconvenient. I believe the establishment could significantly enhance the overall dining experience by addressing this issue.
On a positive note, the location was appealing and added to the overall ambiance. The menu offered a variety of dishes, and I found the pricing to be reasonable considering the quality of the food. The flavors were rich, and the ingredients used showcased a commitment to quality. Despite the seating inconvenience, the staff was attentive and courteous, contributing to a positive atmosphere. The restaurant excelled in terms of food quality, taste, and service, the absence of proper seating facilities was a noticeable downside. I would recommend the establishment to those who prioritize excellent food and service over a traditional dining setup. If the seating issue is addressed, it could elevate the dining experience to a...
