Indian Coffee House is a restaurant chain in India, run by a series of worker co-operative societies. It has strong presence across India with nearly 400 coffee houses.

The India Coffee House chain was started by the Coffee Cess Committee, the first outlet – then named ‘India Coffee House’ – opened in Churchgate, Bombay in 1936, and was operated by the Indian Coffee Board. In the course of the 1940s there were nearly 50 Coffee Houses all over British India. Post partition, Pakistan inherited the branches of Indian Coffee Houses in its major cities and continued the coffee house legacy as a social place in fostering intellectual discussions.

In India, due to a change in the policy in the mid-1950s, the Coffee Board decided to close down the Coffee Houses. Encouraged by the communist leader A. K. Gopalan (AKG), the workers of the Coffee Board began a movement and compelled the Coffee Board to agree to hand over the outlets to the workers who then formed Indian Coffee Workers' Co-operatives and renamed the network as Indian Coffee House. A co-operative began in Bangalore on 19 August 1957, and one was established in Delhi on 27 December 1957. Later Bellary and Madras Societies were separated from their mother societies. Malviya Marg Karam Chand Chowk Branch, Jabalpur serves as the head office of ICWCS. In October 2018, Indian Coffee House opened its 8th branch of Jabalpur.

There are 13 co-operative societies in the country to run the coffee houses. These societies are governed by managing committees elected from the employees. The societies affiliated under All India Coffee Workers' Co- operative Societies Federation formed 17...

A momental place established in british era.. Building and Interiors are quite old and unchanged...this review is divided in two parts First part why you should go for this outlet and Second part why you should not go...this was my experience with this restaurant.. randomly i have opted this after seeing review ! Lets start

Why you should go for it :-

  1. Echoing british era infrastructure, building and historical environment
  2. You will rarely experience such type things in this century
  3. Very economical stuffs if you love South Indian, eggs,Mutton etc
  4. They have lots of space, two different seating space for family and individuals.
  5. Waiters are in traditional ancient uniforms which is totally different from other restaurants.
  6. Coffees are outstanding you should go for it.
  7. Well cooked meals are provided

Why you should not go for it :-

  1. If you are veg preferring foodie then this place is not for you...few steps ahed you will find better eating outlets
  2. Taste is not that much impressive, overall an average ratings can be given... You will definitely find better taste few steps ahed
  3. Staggering fact but true.. plates smells as like it had been not properly washed with due care.
  4. Harrowing unhygienic atmosphere all over the seating space.
  5. Hand Washing facility is unavailable..they will provide you a bucket and a bug... Which is not at all expected..use sanitizer.
  6. Cooking place is very much murky
  7. Supply water will be provided to you for drinking and same water is used for the cooking too...

It was indeed a delight to see people actually having discussions there. The place was noisy but it was GOOD noise, one of the things which is keeping the legacy of ICH intact. This place holds a special importance in Indian politics as it (along with other ICHs) has been a witness to discussions of renowned poets, politicians, intellectuals, and freedom fighters. **Food** I ordered dosa but the stuffing not at all felt like it was meant for dosa because it had burnt onions. Veg cutlet was somewhat good, extremely soft inside, just melts in the mouth. Coffee was keeping the standards intact TBH I liked Connaught place ICH more. **Service** was pretty fast and staff was courteous. **Ambiance** In contrast to the reviews posted before, the situation is under control now, as the walls are freshly painted and they have a separate corner for hand wash. The place nonetheless gives one COLONIAL VIBES. High ceiling fans, staff in typicall high cap vintage architecture. A must go place if one wants to get a taste of history along with food. P.S:- I haven't tasted their non veg stuff but I've heard that it's a speciality over here.
