Kalsang, situated on the bustling Rajpur Road in Dehradun, has long been one of the city’s most talked-about dining spots, offering a blend of casual café culture and flavorful Asian cuisine under one roof. The ground-floor café welcomes you with warm lighting, cozy wooden interiors, and a calm, laid-back vibe perfect for both quick coffee breaks and long conversations. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingles with the sweet scent of baked goods, immediately setting the mood. Here, one can enjoy café classics like BLT sandwiches, banana pancakes, chocolate cheese delicacies, and thick, indulgent peanut-butter shakes. On the other hand, if you’re craving something more exotic, the upstairs Kalsang Restaurant is where Tibetan, Thai, and Chinese influences shine through. Popular dishes that regulars recommend include the Devil Momos—spicy and flavorful enough to win over momo lovers—the chicken kothay, and the mutton momos, each served fresh and generously filled. The Thai green curry stands out for its rich, creamy texture and strong coconut flavor; while many adore it, some find it overpowering, making it a true “love it or leave it” dish. For dessert, their cheesecake has a loyal fan following and serves as a perfect ending to a hearty meal. While the food menu is diverse and the ambience inviting, Kalsang has had its share of mixed reviews, particularly when it comes to service and cleanliness. Some diners have praised the staff’s polite demeanor and prompt service on good days, but others have reported disappointing experiences, such as unresponsive staff when complaints were raised, delays in serving, and even lapses in hygiene. In a few reported incidents, guests have found hair in their food or spotted cockroaches near tables, which, understandably, left a lasting negative impression. These inconsistencies in service quality can be jarring, especially for a restaurant that enjoys such a high reputation in Dehradun’s food scene. Pricing at Kalsang is moderate to slightly on the higher side compared to other eateries in the area, but many feel the unique menu justifies it—at least when the experience is up to standard. The location on Rajpur Road is undeniably a plus, as it is easily accessible, surrounded by scenic greenery, and just a short drive from popular tourist and local hangouts. The atmosphere inside is equally photogenic, making it popular among younger crowds and social media enthusiasts looking for that perfect café snapshot. Overall, Kalsang is a place where you can enjoy both light café bites and hearty Asian mains, making it versatile enough for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. However, it is also a spot where your dining experience may vary depending on the day and the team on duty. If you’re visiting for the first time, the safest bets are their devil momos, chicken kothay, cheesecake, and a cold coffee or peanut butter shake to balance the spice. For repeat visitors, the charm lies in exploring their vast menu while hoping for one of those “good service” days. In short, Kalsang on Rajpur Road offers a memorable experience when it gets things right, but still has room to polish its consistency in service and hygiene to truly live up to its potential as Dehradun’s go-to dining...

Read moreEditing my previous review since had a bad experience recently and it should be put done so that they can do better! A loyal customer since it opened but this time round when we went to grab dinner on 23 June 2023 the wait staff just could not handle the crowd and it wasnt even supremely crowded I have been to places which have been crowded and yet the staff have been at the top of it but not Kalsang. Firstly since it was a relatively hot and humid day the place was really hot and when we asked the fan to be turned towards us the staff refused saying someone else sitting at the other table needed it. We waited for a better spot and then shifted but once seated the staff had to reminded five times for glasses to drink water eventhough we did get our bottle of water as soon as we sat. The momos took time to come as had been intimated to us but unlike other times eventhough they did take 20 mins to bring them to the table the momos were not pipping hot. We have seriously had hotter momos when we have ordered them at our house which is 15 mins away so that was a big let down. The food was average that day the service bad as we had to remind the staff that 6 people needed 6 plates and not 3 and instead of the staff being attentive towards us we had to keep looking out for them. This is something one doesn't look for when one goes out to eat. It is sad that once places start getting famous and crowded they are unable to handle and crowd and that seems the way it has become with Kalsang also. Sadly we might just resort to ordering in rather than dinning in from now on.
8 June 2023 Been a loyal customer since it first opened in Doon. Yesterday we were the first to reach when they opened for the day and still our order came right on time and was as fabulous and lipsmacking as possible. We throughly enjoyed our lunch. The good was good the ambience beautiful and the...
