THE FALLING OF RUSTIC HOUSE!
Rustic house used to be one of the best cafes and restaurants in I'd say a 80km radius even better than most cafes in Dehradun but over the past years it has nothing but deteriorate in major aspects.
Being an avid food enthusiast I have visited many cafes in Dehradun and Delhi and Rustic used to be in my Top 10 but now it is not even in my Top 25. And when I say top, I mean really really good Cafes and Restrobars.
Highlighting the cons first so that they can be looked into by the owner himself who runs the cafe himself and is there for majority of the time -
Time - At most days especially during weekends they are slammed. Getting food sometimes even takes 30 minutes.
Server/Waiter quality - The mindfulness and approach of few waiters are below average, some are moody and some are really good and take genuine effort to understand customer needs (eg - Mr. Joshi or Ankit or the Pahari looking guy) All should be given proper training from time to time to upkeep with the quality and customer needs & Most importantly and the funniest of all, to teach them what goes in making of each dish and what does it actually taste like so that they can explain when a customer asks. Take a random quiz from them and you'll know who knows how much about the Menu.
Menu - Although the menu has a wide array of food from different cuisines but simple things are missed and when I say simple I mean bare minimum. For example there is no option to add additional vegetables, chicken or egg in your dish and if you request they would repeat the same dish and add that hefty amount to the bill. A simple e.g.. - An omelet is of 2 eggs here and no option to add more eggs or egg whites for those who want to modify there dish or additional chicken/vegetables in your soup or extra tofu in the Batman bowl per se. And I am sure even if they bring this option, the prices would not be very customer friendly. My guess, approx. INR 100 for additional chicken/veggies (in which they won't disclose the quantity of chicken that will be added) and at least INR 50/60 for one egg costing INR 8 :P
No option of Skim, Lactose free, Soy or Almond in Kasida as an alternative for regular milk (coffee places like Blue Tokai hardly charge 20/30 for substituting the same & the prices of both of the coffee menu are almost same, in fact they are cheaper given they are in Delhi a Metro and we are in Roorkee a Tier - 3 where the earning and spending index is significantly lower)
Also, the taste of food is a hit or a miss. On some days the food tastes amazing and on some days even simple items like a platter taste bland and poor.
Now some Pro, cause it's not all bad :D
Ambience - The ambience is really really cozy and authentic with a proper place for everything and looks cool. Hats off to the interior.
Menu - You won't get such wide variety of cuisine anywhere nearby at one place. From Mexican to Italian to Asian and even Brunch options like yoghurt bowls etc. everything is covered.
Beverages - The beverages especially the cocktails taste amazing.
So, all in all good but major changes are required cause let's be real the prices that are being charged are not ordinary for Roorkee.
Just an opinion and observation of a localite :)
Edit after 2 months - As I mentioned 2 months back, the prices will be increased and they did. And they have soared like crazy.
An example of the healthy salads offering - They cost 550-600 rs and for what????? Not even 100 grams of tofu or chicken in that plus basic veggies and sauces.
And same goes for each dish on the menu!
The prices of food and drinks have significantly increased by at least 30-35%, but what has not improved is the timely arrival of food and consistency in food quality and taste. It takes 35 to 45 minutes to get the food and drinks.
And now it's safe to say, the sole purpose of the cafe is to earn profit margins and not to...
Read moreFirst time visit: it was excellent experience. We ordered paneer tikka for starter. The cottage cheese was enough charred roasted in juicy, tasty curd that was well sunken into its molecular structure and served with mild spicy mint sauce. The element that brought ultimate satisfaction was that we wanted to have dhaba type fermented khasta Nan from tandoor. This special request was entertained by chef despite its wasn't there I the menu. The other cottage cheese dish was sumptuous too.
Second time visit: We tried fhalafhal plate, I didn't find it auhenticatlly tasty. I had this original recipe one of the famous middle East restaurant once. Thai spring roles were ok. My companions found paneer lababdar tasty. I found chana masala was ok, little oily. It was having cottage cheese in it to make the heavy rich. For vegans it's one of the few heavy protein diet that was destroyed by such practices. This time same chef was not present so khasta Nan request wasn't entertained.
Third time visit:
Third time we visited and ordered Nan khasta (it was served first time and written in bill by this terminology) assuming they know what I am referring. I was served some wierd hard cooked roti made of semolina (check the snapshot). I asked twice if this is khasta roti, dude who was serving, confidently said yes it is. Without getting into argument (having pity on his understanding of the very term khasta which indicates something very soft and crunchy same time) I decided to chew the roti with water.
Pro: Sitting Environment is well composed but gets noisy during festivals and weekends. Washroom is first class. Serving staff is smart enough to serve all courses in proper time, clearly bringing starter and the main course with perfect timing so as to keeping an eye without letting you know this. There is a DJ floor (without lighting). A bar is also present in-house.
Cons: This place is on first floor. The parking space is thrifty but one attendent is always present to help you finding parking and seeing you off. Not exactly original recipe is followed. This place serves non-vegetarian options, I'm not sure pure vegans and vegetarian Indians would be able to clear there mind about same kitchen, chef and utensils. Serving persons have no...
Read moreWe have been a frequent visitor to the cafe but unfortunately realized that the place is not safe for women.Yesterday 3 of us (all females) went to cafe and had a really bad experience with one of the customer who literally threw a iron laden chair toward us without any reason, infact one of my friend got minor soft tissue injury, she have got bruises and swelling on her leg,but luckily there was no major injury. We had no interaction with this guy infact we didn’t know who he was.So obviously this showed he was mentally challenged. The most disgusting experience was with the owner who handled the situation very unprofessionally,he didn’t apologize to us, when we went to him all he was concerned about his chair been broken. There was no compensation,he didn’t even held those guys and gave us the explanation that they have called the cop but since it’s an indian system they take time in coming, obviously they were lying. We were so surprised because we go to enormous places, pubs in bigger city but never experienced such thing. Just a bad experience and very bad managing skill of the owner. Also i would like to mention that this also shows the narrow mindedness of the owner because they might have taken us otherwise.Infact 2of us are doctors then also we face...
