A Whirlwind of Culinary Confusion at Mostly
During my recent visit to Bali, our hotel concierge recommended "Mostly" in Canggu. With high Google reviews backing his suggestion, and despite my friend's previous unfortunate experience, we decided to give it a shot. My friend, ever the optimist, was willing to give it a second chance.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by what appeared to be a restaurant with an identity crisis. The evening menu was surprisingly sparse, offering a perplexing mix of international dishes with no discernible theme or system. Our waitress struggled to describe the dishes, making our choices feel like a game of culinary roulette.
We ordered both appetizers and main courses, only to be asked if we wanted everything served together or separately—something that clearly baffled our server. Identifying which dishes were appetizers versus mains seemed to be a challenge, and for a moment, we questioned if we were on a hidden camera show.
The dumplings, purportedly filled with broccoli and peanuts, were a peanut extravaganza with no trace of broccoli. The Korean BBQ cauliflower was drowned in a thick sauce, obliterating any hint of the vegetable beneath. Our pleas for clean plates before the main course finally yielded results after much persistence.
Adding to the comedy of errors, the bottle of water we ordered at the start only made its grand entrance with our food. The restaurant's playlist oscillated between various genres, making us wonder if the music curator had a split personality. At one point, a patron took to the piano and began playing what can only be described as funeral music—unchallenged by the staff.
To top it off, a family with a toddler, who couldn't have been older than two, was still dining at 9 PM, adding to the overall surreal experience. The salmon yakitori skewers, listed as a main course, were more akin to an appetizer in size. When we inquired about the dip, our server was stumped, leaving us to guess its ingredients.
A final note for potential diners: American Express is not accepted here, which is quite unusual for a place frequented by international tourists.
In summary, "Mostly" is mostly confusion and partially entertainment. Approach with an open mind and low expectations—you're in for a memorable night, if not a gastronomically...
Read moreFor the first time trying Mostly I Ordered takeaway food, pretty impressive I must say, now after how good the takeaway food experience was, I will be soon dining in to experience the restaurant and menu properly. Ordered the Korean cauliflower wings, didnt even realise I was eating cauliflower. Veg Bangkok street noodles with mushroom katzu was a bit to sweet I was asked what level of spice from 1-9 so I just said 4 to go half way to test out the spice level, If I was to order it again id probably ask for level 7 to balance the sweetness of the dish, not sure why it's sweet but still very tasty and clean, and the Veg Truffle Ramen my partner loved but said it would be better with the thicker rice noodle like what's used in the Bangkok noodles to add more texture and chew, but was still rated delicious, also got 2 desserts, this is where I'd probably only give 3-4 stars for the desserts, visually great, can tell alot of care and creativeness has gone into making them, but the Vanilla tart was lacking a good natural Vanilla kick, the tart overall flavour once in your mouth is dominant biscuit and tart pastry, the cream and vanilla flavour is washed out so was on the bland side for a Vanilla tart. The choco Bar which I was told is one of the most popular desserts the restaurant sells is visually amazing very creative has a really nice white cream and brown sugar topping but half way through eating the bar it had already started to give me a sweetness burn in my throat and I didn't desire to even finish it, it has the right flavors going on but the sweetness needs to be reduced and balanced more. Walking in the decor is beautiful all the staff seem friendly and helpful, so looking forward to...
Read moreWe came here specially for the plant-based ramen and sushi options that they offer, as a final meal in Bali before rushing for our flight. There was happy hour 1-1 drinks which includes cocktail when we were there and after asking the waiter about it, we ordered 2 different cocktails on the menu. However 2 of the same cocktails came and that’s when we were informed that it’s 1-1 of the same cocktail. This condition was not communicated to us verbally nor written on the happy hour poster. We tried to cancel the other cocktail we ordered as we couldn’t finish 4 cocktails while in a rush to finish the meal and get to the airport. We tried to tell the staff that there was a serious miscomm and we were not informed of this condition. The staff and manager all insisted that it is written on the poster and that we ordered with prior knowledge of this. The service management’s handling of this situation was highly disappointing as we had to point it out with the poster at hand that there has been no mention of this in writing nor in person prior to our order. We are okay to pay for the other 2 cocktails but it is not okay to blame your guests for a mistake that is fundamentally your own. This incident made the meal and experience a very unpleasant one as we did not hear a single apology from the service staff nor manager. We will not return to this restaurant anymore due to this incident as we did not enjoy the meal. If the service team at mostly continues with this service attitude, you will only continue to lose business and customers at...
