Red Gunpowder offers a beautiful dining experience in the heart of Canggu, blending Indian flavors with a chic, modern twist.
🌿 Ambience & Service
The ambience is absolutely on point—warm, stylish, and inviting. From the lighting to the music, it creates the perfect setting for both a relaxed dinner and a special night out. The service deserves a big shoutout: quick, attentive, and professional. The staff knows their stuff and really elevates the overall experience.
🍽️ Food & Flavor
The presentation of each dish was gorgeous—Instagram-worthy for sure. The food, overall, is enjoyable, but I personally found it a bit too tomato-forward across several dishes. There’s a slightly westernized tone to the flavors, which might work for some, but as someone familiar with authentic Indian cuisine, I felt it could benefit from a stronger grounding in traditional spice balance.
🔥 Standout Dish:
Samosa Tartelette – Absolutely brilliant. Creative, well-balanced, and bursting with flavor.
👍 Good but Could Be Better:
Bhuna Chicken – Decent, but the gravy was too watery and tomato-heavy. Traditionally, a Bhuna should be drier and more robust in spices.
Dal Makhni – Creamy but again, dominated by tomato and lacking that deep, slow-cooked flavor you'd expect.
🍨 Undeniably Amazing:
Mango Medley (Dessert) – A perfect ending. Light, vibrant, and beautifully executed.
📜 Final Thoughts
Red Gunpowder has so much potential. The menu is creative and exciting, and with just a little more authenticity and spice integrity, it could really become a go-to for Indian cuisine in Bali. That said, it’s still very much worth a visit for the ambience, service, and...
Read moreHad a grumble here recently … but I’m still rating them 5/5 . 95 % of postings on reviews are generally positive . It’s the action that’s taken when things go unusually off the rails that’s important to me . So …. We had an unusual situation happen recently where the coordination between the kitchen and wait staff seemed disconnected . Maybe they had a really busy night or maybe everyone ordered the lamb brianyi rice at the same time ? Regardless , there was a considerable ( and unacceptable ) wait time between curry and rice . I was annoyed because I had waited a long time ….. but it was the reaction of the wait staff that impressed me above all . !!! It’s easy to write negative reviews on circumstantial occurrences which aren’t the norm . My preference is to tackle the issue up front and then judge how things are handled from there . I voiced my concern to staff . The staff were more than amazing ! … even though I wasn’t initially accommodating . They were genuinely apologetic about the disconnect that night and I could see it in their actions . They were devastated . They brought about a solution which was more than reasonable and which ultimately meant that I would still return there in the future . Their foresight to customer retention was commendable . Well done to that team and to their training . This is the reason that I will always hold this restaurant in high...
Read moreFood - outstanding naan, especially the blue cheese and garlic coriander. Rogan Josh had fantastically tender lamb, although the taste was somewhat lost as it was overpowered by the sauce quite a bit. The masala battered barramundi appetizer was spot on. A wonderful combination of flavor and textures - the fish moist and succulent, with the breading crisp as could be and matched well with its fixings. The beetroot clay pot was delicious as well, a generous portion of okra - but again, I'd say the sauce was slightly overbearing. Not that it's a bad thing, and certainly great for dipping your naan, just a bit too overpowering for my taste. Ordered a Negroni, which was slightly below expectations but not bad by any means, just a bit on the weak side and contained too much ice.
Service was fantastic, attentive, prompt.
The whole vibe is very warm and quirky, opting for inside seating was a great choice. Spicy Indian food and Bali heat do not go well, I have no idea how people can sit outside and not sweat their arse off. I wouldn't call the atmosphere authentic Indian, but it's a nice fusion of styles and the lighting is very comfortable, including tall candles, which would make it a great date night choice. Overall, I'd definitely come back and try some other menu items (sadly they were out of the beef tartare which I had eyed up...
