Read moreWe arrived at the gazebo and relaxed for around 30 minutes without anyone approaching us. Eventually, we went to order two coconuts, and that’s when Putu informed us that there was a minimum spend of 500k IDR per person to stay at the gazebo. This seemed unreasonable because the place wasn’t anything like a busy beach club in Canggu—there were no crowds, and all three gazebos were completely empty. In fact, if we hadn’t gone to order, no one would’ve even noticed we were there.
We explained that we only wanted coconuts at that moment but planned to return for dinner. Putu agreed, and we stayed for another 30 minutes before leaving. As promised, we came back for dinner later that day.
However, when the bill arrived, Putu pointed out that our total was only 600k IDR and implied that it still wasn’t enough, referencing the 500k per person minimum again. This was confusing because we had clearly discussed our plans earlier.
What made the situation worse was their attitude. Both Putu and his colleague Dewa came across as rude, pointing at their name tags with an attitude that felt more like playground bravado than professional hospitality—“Yes, that’s my name,” as if trying to initiate a fight in a sandbox at the age of five. But we weren’t children on a playground—we were their guests.
When we said we’d prefer to settle the matter now because we wouldn’t return the next day, they dismissed us with laughter, joking about it as if it were some sort of challenge. Their mocking tone, saying things like “Come tomorrow, talk to our manager” felt unprofessional and disrespectful. The way they spoke about their manager gave us the impression that this type of behavior was not only accepted but likely endorsed at the restaurant.
This entire experience was disappointing, especially from a place where we expected a higher standard of professionalism, respect, and...
