Cafe Kok Tong — Restaurant in City of Pematang Siantar

The Kok Tong Cafe is located at the junction of Cipto Street and Wahidin Street, the first founding address in Pematang Siantar city North Sumatera Province, Indonesia. It is the first main store founded by the owner Mr. Lin Kok Tong 林国东 in Pematang Siantar City in 1925. The original name of this coffee shop was MASSA Coffee Shop (Kedai Kopi Massa) 群众咖啡室 before it is changed to Kok Tong Cafe 国东咖啡室. I have ever visited this coffee shop frequently at the late 90th decade of 20th century. This coffee shop is usually very crowded. Sitting in this coffee shop, ordering an early morning breakfast, a cup of Kok Tong Coffee, sipping it slowly to savor it, enjoying the coolness of the morning, is also a kind of enjoyment in life. There is a wide variable selections of delicious food, instant cooked hot food, such as Rice Flat Noodle or ordinary noodle as well, and much more, with a cup of hot coffee, is quite a good experience. The coffee tastes good and the food is OK. This coffee shop has maintained the traditional style of Chinese coffee shops for decades, there is simple layout, round tables and stools, cups, plates, bowls and chopsticks, all are full of Chinese coffee shop characteristic. Now we can no longer have the chance to see these sights, these have become history Having the strong control ability to its coffee flavor and quality, since they have lot coffee bean sources that harvested from the coffee farms all around the region in this nation, especially Western region of Indonesia. They could smartly manage their coffee quality and maintain the good taste served to meet customer's satisfaction. In the early years of 21st century, in order to keep up and promote the business run more well, they started to make a business network expanding, in order to meet the need of trend changing era. Taking advantage of the ever-growing business, the family members of the owner finally took advantage of the previous victory to pursue the challenge, changed the business style and adapted to the market trend of the time, created a franchise mode branding "Kok Tong". Modified the style of cafes, adjusted its products and services, and opened many branches one after another in various strategic places. It has expanded to alot of metro city or region out from Pematang Siantar City and spread over all major cities. The branches mainly maintain the smooth sales of the Kok Tong Coffee brand, as their main business pillar. The food seems to be provided freedomly by each branch according to the local eating taste and habits. Sufficient sources of supply and origin, specially selected coffee beans, and then carefully made into top-grade coffee powder by the owner, brewing it into a mellow coffee drink. My first feeling is the place of the origin which is Kok Tong near the junction street between Cokroaminoto and Wahidin street so crowded make visitor unable to find comfort place to sit. However Kok Tong has opened few branches near the origin place with only walking distance so we can choose the less crowded ones. The service is quite fast with consideration of the crowded atmosphere. The food is also good to my taste level of course. The drink which is black coffee is the original drink provided in this cafe. It is very good while the milk coffee for me I think need to add a bit more of the black coffee in it to balance the mix taste while keeping the black coffee taste in it. A must visit place for coffee lover. The coffee is quite strong but taste good. Bakpau is also delicious and the recommend one is either pork bakpau or the red bean, so if you’re looking for Halal food, please be aware. The shop itself is quite classic and they were established in 1925 based on the sign in the shop. The service is fast so you don’t have wait long for your coffee, even in busy hours. Typical coffee shop: crowded, noisy, smoke from cigarette everywhere but, if you don’t mind with all of that then you come to the right place. Location is easy to reach but in busy hours, good luck finding a parking spot and a table. Overall, this place is worth to visit and feel the taste of Pematang...
