A Culinary Journey at Slab Steak Lab: Hits and Misses in South Jakarta
I recently embarked on a culinary adventure at Slab Steak Lab in the heart of South Jakarta, and while the experience had its ups and downs, it offered a unique blend of flavors that left me with mixed feelings.
Let's start with the main event—the steak. While the ambiance of Slab Steak Lab exudes sophistication and promises a top-notch dining experience, the steak itself left something to be desired. The price tag attached to the cut seemed a bit steep for the quality delivered. The flavor profile was unfortunately lacking, and despite the staff's recommendation to torch-rate the steak, it didn't quite reach the medium-rare perfection I had hoped for. A minor disappointment in the realm of steak enthusiasts.
However, the journey took a turn for the better with the creamy truffle pasta. This dish was an absolute delight and managed to redeem the overall dining experience. The rich and velvety texture of the pasta, coupled with the unmistakable aroma and flavor of truffle, created a symphony of tastes that lingered on the palate in the best possible way. In my opinion, the creamy truffle pasta alone made the visit worthwhile.
For those planning to dine at Slab Steak Lab, my recommendation would be to lean towards the pasta selection. If you're visiting with a companion, consider ordering two pasta dishes and sharing a steak to strike a balance and make the most of the diverse offerings.
In conclusion, Slab Steak Lab is a restaurant of contrasts. While the steak may not have lived up to the high expectations set by its ambiance and price, the creamy truffle pasta shines as a star on the menu. It's a place where your dining experience may hinge on your menu choices, so choose wisely and savor the memorable moments that come...
Read moreMy new fave place to have a steak! We tried the Scotch Fillet AUS Wagyu Rib Eye MB3, Sumatran Wagyu Picanha MB 5, and Flat Iron Sumatran Wagyu Oyster Blade MB 5. Love all of them, but particularly enjoyed the Scotch Fillet more. Somehow the meat feels more tender.
They have three types of butter to choose, and we love the tomato one best. Tried the Truffle sauce, too. It was yummy, but too powerful to be paired with the steak for me. Maybe because I prefer to enjoy my steak clean without any sauce better, that way I can really appreciate the taste of the meat. I ended up eating the truffle sauce with french fries lol.
We tried the spinach cream as well. Very yummy, but to me this would be perfect for a dipping sauce, and I enjoyed it with french fries, too.
The dessert, Blueberry Cheese Crumble was amazing! Love the texture, love the blueberry hint, and it was a perfect one to close the dinner.
The service and staffs were five stars! They were very very attentive and friendly. They made sure we feel very comfortable, caters all of our needs, and they made sure things done well as how we want it. The steak that came first was a little colder than our preference, maybe because it was heavy raining and a bit chill so the serving plate was colder faster than usual, and the plating takes longer than usual, so when it was brought up to our table, it was less warm. But then the staff on duty makes sure to the kitchen that our second and third steak came perfectly warm as how we love it.
Overall, it was a very pleasurable dinner experience for us. It feels like a semi fine dining lol. We will definitely be back oftenly!
PS: They allow us to choose the knife which was cute 🤭 and this place is not wheelchair friendly cause it is located on a second floor with a circling...
Read moreMy wife was over the moon to take me here—she’d been raving about how this is hands-down the best steak joint in town. She’d gone once before with her coworkers but didn’t get to fully enjoy it since they’d ordered a shared platter that time.
So when we finally went together, our expectations were pretty high. Now, I’ll admit—I’m not much of a steak guy myself, but I was curious enough to give it a try. Funny thing is, as soon as we pulled up, I realized I’d driven past this place a bunch of times on my way to work. It’s tiny. Like, really small. Blink and you’d miss it.
But once we stepped inside, I was pleasantly surprised. The setup was thoughtful—nicely set tables, clean silverware, folded napkins, the whole bit. The staff was just lovely, too. Super friendly, helped us understand the menu, and even let us switch to a cozier table when we asked.
I ordered the flat iron, and my wife went with the tenderloin. Pricey, for sure—but they said it was wagyu, which got me even more curious. While we waited (not long—about 10 minutes), we just soaked in the atmosphere. It’s a charming spot, even if you’re elbow-to-elbow with the next table. I really enjoyed just sitting there, chatting with my wife.
When the food came out, my wife lit up—said it was the best steak she’s ever had. As for me? Well... I could tell it was high quality, but I guess I just don’t “get” expensive meat. Don’t get me wrong—it wasn’t bad by any means. Just tasted like... meat? Maybe my taste buds aren’t fancy enough, ha. But my wife was in heaven, and that’s what mattered.
All in all, I’d give it a solid 9 out of 10. No complaints, really. If they had a bit more space, it’d be a perfect 10. If you're someone who truly appreciates a high-end cut of meat, this place is definitely worth...
