I had dinner with a friend at this Suck My Duck and ordered:
Chicken shumai. It was okay, nothing special. Three pieces for 33k were not worth that much. Asparagus crab meat soup. It was okay, nothing special. Sizable bowl for 49k. The taste was not worth the price. Roast duck. It was tender and juicy. Definitely the winner in taste, yet the price for half duck 175k. It was a tad too high. Crispy kaylan. It was really crispy and tasty. This was the runner-up in taste, but it was not worth 62k. Hainan rice (no picture). It was bland and definitely the loser. It was even worse for 19k. Free flow water for drink (free of charge).
The service was responsive, and the ambiance was comfortable, but the price was too much for such foods. That was the only thing that prevented me from giving this restaurant a five-star.
Coming back to Suck My Duck, we ordered foods and drink seen in pictures. The main dish was Peking duck (half) and we were a little disappointment with it because the portion was rather small, the duck skin was not that crispy, and the fried rice which was cooked with the duck meat was somewhat oily. The kaylan was crispy but not as tasty as expected. The only good one was the soup, while the drink was okay. The ambiance was crowded, yet the service was helpful. We also liked the free flow water for drink. We spent 483k (215k was for Peking duck) for three people. Don't you think it was a bit too much?
This visit was after a long pause. I ordered most of what I had ordered in the past, such as asparagus crab soup, crispy and slices of roasted duck, and the taste never changed. Good job for maintaining the quality thus far. The...
Read moreI decided to eat at this resto without reservation with my friends. We asked a waitress to ask a seat but it was all occupied. However, she didn't ask and did not even put our name in the waiting list. She just went inside and never came back for about 15 minutes. I was waiting at that time and saw people just easily get seated. When we asked why people keep on getting seated, she responded unkindly and said that these people had reservation. We were confused and also disappointed on how she reponded. Luckily, we were then seated by other waiter. I suggest that those who want to dine here to take a reservation through their instagram account.
The food was nice. I personally love the duck roast and its chilli oil. The hainan rice has strong ginger taste so if you do not like this, I recommend you to have the white rice option. We also ordered Buttersquid and Salted Egg Tofu, both were awesome, so creamy and fresh from the cooks. Those were still crunchy but be careful as it is very hot. They offered free refill water which is rare to be found in other restaurant. The room was nicely lit with mandarin themed interior.
Btw, for the service, the waiters/swaitresses was very responsive, except the one that we encounter during our arrival. The food take some times to be served as there were also online food orders to...
Read moreLast night after landing from East Kalimantan, I invited Mamie and Donna to enjoy dinner before resting. Donna chose a Chinese restaurant located across from my house.
Suck My Duck is a halal Chinese restaurant that is quite popular in Jakarta, especially in Kebayoran Baru/Hang Tuah. The name and concept are quite intriguing because they are a bit eccentric (‘Suck My Duck’), and the interior is designed with a modern oriental feel, cosy and quite Instagram-worthy. The restaurant also has Halal certification from MUI.
I ordered a plate of roasted chicken rice while Mamie and Donna each ordered a plate of roasted Hainan chicken. The rice paired with the roasted chicken was delicious, especially after I added a few spoonfuls of chilli oil. The aroma of the spices blended uniquely with the spicy taste of the chilli oil.
In my opinion, this restaurant is quite successful in many aspects: the atmosphere and design support a comfortable dining experience, the unique name branding makes people curious, and most of the signature dishes are quite well-crafted—especially the roasted chicken rice and Hainan rice, which combine the soft texture of roasted chicken, slightly crispy skin, spices/sauce that are not too overpowering, and fragrant...
