This is the ONLY cafe in Makassar serving genuine top-shelf, quality, locally-sourced coffee. Makassar does have the usual gaggle of chain coffee shops, such as Starbucks, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, and Excelso. They all serve generic, often overpriced and overroasted beans fit only for undiscerning audience, served by uncaring staff. Toarco Toraja Coffee stands heads and shoulders above the rest. Enjoy beans sourced directly from Toraja, 300km from Makassar. Toarco maintains its own plantation in Toraja, and it also sources coffee from local smallholders. Drinking Toarco coffee means supporting local Torajan community, as well as ensuring that your beans actually come from plants grown at 1800m - 2500m elevation above sea level.
At Toarco Toraja Coffee, guests are served lightly roasted, blond-colored beans that maximise Torajan beans' innate multifaceted flavors. The cafe does serve frappes and frappucinos and complex milk froth-topped drinks, but guests are advised to skip these and go straight to the simple black coffee. Choose your preferred beans' village of origin, and the barista will grind your beans of choice and brew them using one of the two methods: hand drip using a Hario V60 cone or syphon. The resulting brew is almost sweet and fruity, with just the right amount of acidity, and minimal bitterness. Do have the first sip plain, unsweetened. After the first sip, do add just a touch of palm sugar. Forgo cream or milk.
At the end of the visit, guests can buy beans to be enjoyed at home. The beans can be ground to one's liking, or buy them whole (this is the recommended method; invest in a home grinder and enjoy a freshly ground...
Read moreToarco Toraja Coffee has become one of my favorite coffee shop in Makassar now! Thanks to Asian Food Network that brought me here 😄
If you're a coffee fan, you'll be very happy to be here, as you can enjoy various coffee drinks, including the choices of manual brew, coffee beans from Toraja, as well as Asian and Western foods. They also sell various coffee beans and merchandise.
The staff is very friendly and helpful. They could explain well about the menu and coffee, including the recommendation. For the coffee, just like their recommendation, I also highly recommend Natural Process and Pulu Pulu. Even their Chocolate Coffee is great! It's a les sweet and refreshing chocolate drink with coffee taste that is still dominant. How nice and recommended!
Actually, this is a joint venture business of Key Coffee Inc. from Japan and an Indonesian company, so no wonder that their Japanese food, like Omurice is one of their recommended food. Do try their curry omurice! Comes up in a generous portion with delicious taste. Recommended!
Lastly, I would like to say that the space is spacious and comfortable to stay in for hanging out, working, etc. Well done, Toarco...
Read moreI visited around 20.30 on a weekend, just as the place was nearing closing time, so it was quite calm and not crowded—perfect for a more relaxed experience. Despite the late hour, the staff was friendly and attentive, with the waiter taking the time to offer thoughtful recommendations based on my preferences.
The menu is impressive, with a wide variety of coffee options ranging from classic brews to more unique creations. The food and snack selections are also quite extensive and well-prepared, offering something for everyone, whether you're in the mood for a light bite or something more filling.
What makes this place even more interesting is that it doubles as a lifestyle space. They sell various merchandise, including coffee tools, beans for home brewing, and even branded apparel, which adds a unique and personal touch to the overall experience.
The environment is clean, cozy, and thoughtfully designed—ideal for hanging out with friends, getting some work done, or simply enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. It’s definitely a spot worth revisiting, especially if you appreciate good coffee in a...
