What an unexpected find in Malang! A tiny Japanese restaurant that opened in Malang not long after covid due to circumstances. The owner is originally from Nagoya, Japan and has been in Indonesia for more than 25 years already.
I had no idea what to expect before coming here. Last minute booked Omakase vol set 5 and to my luck it was available the very same day.
The place is quaint and small. I liked the atmosphere already. The first thing I noticed was the freshWasabi root. I was excited already.
The omakase is a 14-course meal which kicked off with a number of sashimi options. The kobu-jime white fish and blue fine tuna definitely stands out. I learnt from the owner that he was a fish supplier so he knew where to source for certain fishes. There's a reason why a lot of fishes or seafood taste flat is because a lot of them are farmed.
My favorite might be the Aburi Otoro Southern Bluefin Tuna. The tuna melted in your mouth. This particular tuna definitely give you a unique taste sensation with complex aftertaste.
Overall the food is fantastic. Knowing that the owner sourced quality fished boosted that enjoyment too.
The services are excellent too. The chef and team were all very friendly. They tried to explain as much as possible about the different foods they serve, something I generally have struggle learning if you need in Japan due to language barriers.
At the time of writing in Feb 2024, price is around 1.3+ after tax and services. I don't think you can get such prices in Jakarta for a 14-course set. Might possibly be 3-4 mil.
Would definitely come again. They change their omakase menu every 3 months so I look forward to their...
Read moreBecause I was curious I took the step to visit this restaurant which turned out to be very small with only a few places to sit. In retrospect I should not have visited this restaurant at all. Since in my opinion this restaurant is downright bad and also expensive. My idea was that you could eat Japanese food but it turned out that you only could eat sushi and the fact that they even have the designation of an authentic Japanese Restaurant makes no sense at all in that respect if you only serve sushi. The latter doesn't really distinguish you as a Japanese restaurant since there are so many in Malang that serve sushi and far better even. To be not too impolite, I only ordered 6 Maki Tuna Bluef in Torotaku @ IDR 69.000 and a Crystal Bitang @ IDR 53.000, but in fact I rather would have walked out the door straight away. Quality of the sushi wasn't overwhelming either. I have eaten better sushi at Sutakku. No, I don't think this restaurant...
Read morewe discovered this small restaurant a year back while in Malang. It is a small place (max 14 pax) and as such booking is recommended. What’s make it a gem? the style, the wonderful service, the food choice and atmosphere. Entering the restaurant is like traveling thousand of km and find yourself in Japan. I read other reviews saying only Sushi was available. Have you been to that place? You have a perfect sampling of Japanese food Shushi, Sashimi, rice bowl, curry, grill fish and meat, Soba noodle (my favorite though), Unagi, Tempura, etc. What more do you need? Once again our time was well spent and we enjoyed every dish we had. The service and cooking was perfect. Yes it is not cheap but it is relative because the quality is at this price and the cost overall for quality Japanese food was really a bargain. Enjoy your trip to Japan in the center of Malang. Congrat...
